Sizzix Bigz L Die - Half-Square Triangles, 5" Finished Square

Love these quilting dies. Wish they were sold in my big box stores as they sell other sizzix dies. Love that I can use the ones that are up to 6 inches on my Big Kick or Big Shot or Vagabond and avoid the cost of the expensive Big Shot pro...at least for now! I have cut tons of fabric and I have cut up to the 8 layers they say you can cut, and it cuts through fabric so effortlessly. And. those annoying little ends on triangles cut by hand are gone!! The perfect ends allow for perfect alignment and when you sew together, you patchwork is perfect.. have I said "perfect" enough times? You will love how your "points" are there with every block you sew...you will look like a pro!! I have every template and rotary cutter but this makes creating these pieces super fast and accurate. Again, be mindful that you can only buy the dies that are 6" wide (you CAN use the long 25" dies too as long as they are 6 inches wide) unless you have the big shot pro...Wish they were not so expensive- the only downside- as they seem to be made like the other sizzix bigz dies.. For me, it is worth it as I am not throwing away expensive fabric because of a bad cut. BEFORE you cut your fabric on the die, work out how you can cut so to avoid too much waste. I have found that I cut strips a 1/2 wider that the shape (i.e. for a 4 inch half square, I cut 4 1/2 inch strip) and fold over and over the die till I have 8 layers. Then cut away! Last, keep a snip scissor nearby so that if a thread here and there stays attached after cutting, you can snip and NOT pull your piece away. LOVE LOVE LOVE these dies!

It looks very well made like my other dies. I can cut 8 layers of fabric at a time.

The die worked perfectly for my fabric, easily cutting 4-5 pieces. One note-quilters will read 5" complete as 5" finished. In this case, the 1/4" center seam is in the calculation, but not the outer seam. This die makes a 4.5" finished square.

Perfect half square triangles in a fraction of the time it used to take. I make memorial quilts and this has cut down on my cutting time considerably, as well as increasing accuracy. I love to sit and cut while watching TV. I can get an entire quilt cut out in a very short period of time. And the pieces are perfect... 8 layers of quilting fabric at a time.

I have been impressed and happy with all of the Sizzix brand dies so far. This is no exception.

The description is misleading. When sewing the two triangles together, you are left with a 5" square. HOWEVER, my quess is that anyone using the 5" square intends on attaching it to other 5" squares. Am I crazy in thinking that?? When you attach this 5" square to any other straight-edged shape, you are left with a 4.5" FINISHED square. It's o.k. with me. My project can be altered to accommodate a 4.5" square. Just make sure yours can, too. This error is that of the manufacturer, not Amazon.
