Economical replacement pump with good performance for the proper application
04/2025 -10 Year Update: This pump has provided reliable service for my irrigation system since I installed it in 2015. It has run about 12 hours a week, every week, since 2015 without any issues. It has far exceeded my expectations. This Red Lion pump replaced my old 20gpm pump perfectly which finally failed after 27 years. It appears to be well made but its not as substantial as the older pump it replaced being about 3/4 the weight. Its been working flawlessly for my irrigation system for about four weeks now but only time will tell in regards to durability. Be aware this pump is what is considered a three wire pump but current electrical standards dictate that it actually has four wires. The fourth wire is a ground wire which older three wire pumps do not have. I mention this because I had to dig up and replace about 60 feet of electrical conduit since the original wasn't quite large enough to accommodate the new 4 wire pump cable which runs from the well to the pump motor control box. This pump has about 4 feet of cable from the motor to make your wiring splices to. Any other wiring will have to be purchased separately. This pump also comes with a new motor control box which I added a lightning arrestor to since we have a lot here in Florida. This pump also has a built-in check valve but I installed a separate check valve above the pump but below the well's water level as I read is often recommended. The same installation as my old pump. I've read some reviews complaining about disappointing performance from their new pump and I noticed most of those installations involved fairly deep wells. This particular pump model is a low pressure high volume pump intended for shallow wells. My water level is only 20 feet below grade so the pump does not have to overcome much head pressure to produce a lot of volume at 30-50psi. This pump model will not perform well in areas where the water table is deep and it is not intended for those applications. Red Lion has other model pumps for deep wells.

Seems to be a well built pump for the price.
I had to install a pump a few months ago, This pump seems to be on par with most of the pumps out there. It came with the box with the box and capacitor, and connection shrinks for the wires. Shipping was less than 2 days and I purchased it durring prime days. I ordered 3m electrical tape to do the install that took about a week to receive so, I had to go to Lowes and buy The tape to complete the job. The tape from amazon did arive when it said it was going to but, by then I'd already had the pump in for 3 days. The pump is working as expected and only time will tell how good it is.

Impressive warranty service, unlike other manufacturers...
I replaced a 40+ year old deep well pump with this, and hope like heck that this one lasts as long (at which point it will truly earn it's 5 star review ;) ). This unit came with good instruction, a NEW CONTROL BOX (important because the capacitor/relay can cause problems in the motor winding - no point in buying a new $4-500+ pump and reusing the same control box *rolling eyes*- though technically doable), and underwater heat shrink wiring pack. In short, the pump came with all the *necessary* components, went in well (get it? ;-) ), functions perfectly, and shows all signs of lasting as long as the original. There are a couple of things that you may want to get, how much you'll need depends upon your installtion: 1) Rope. - With the black polyethylene piping which is currently in use (for the water), it is a requirement to use some 1/4"+ polypropylene rope to support/hold/retrieve the pump if there is a break in the pipe. http://www.amazon.com/Attwood-Braided-Polypropylene-General-Purpose/dp/B002QVSPV2/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1357310104&sr=1-1&keywords=polypropylene+rope 2) Wire - Also, not something that comes w/ the pump, but since your deep well pump is going to be installed hundreds of feet down underwater, 'standard' outdoor (UWB) wire is NOT okay. underwater pump wire is NOT something you can often find at home depot (though it probably depends on the region), so if you can reuse the wiring, good. If not: http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Cable-423380530-Underwater-500-Foot/dp/B008LTKSA4/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1357311287&sr=1-2&keywords=underwater+pump+cable (or something similar) 3) Pipe - 1" / 1 1/4" black polyethylene pipe (available by the 100' roll) is the current industry standard, and is flexible and easy enough to use that you don't need a truck, a rig, or a well 'A' frame to install or remove it (something rounded, and a car to pull/drop oughta do). Some fittings and clamps and you are good to go: (can't find it at Amazon, luckily Home Depot typically carries it in stock.) While my pump was a royal PITA to replace, it was mainly because my pump was old enough to be installed onto the end of ~150' of welded 1 1/4" galvanized steel piping. Yeah. It sucked for a DIYer. An A-frame w/ an engine hoist, a pair of bench vises (removed from the bench ;-) ), an angle grinder (to cut off ~20' sections of pipe), and several hours of backbreaking labor later, I was ready to quit for the night... luckily the installation (on black poly) was vastly easier! So, it gets five stars for coming with *most* everything needed, good instructions, and working well! Follow up: After 35 1/2 months, my pump failed. While this might be considered a bad thing, it left me even more impressed. Pulling up the pump (at the end of the PE pipe) was straightforward, and simple. Diagnosing the failure was easy (because it blew up two new capacitors, and tested with an obvious dead short internally), and Red Lion **stood behind their 3 yr warranty 2 weeks before it ended **. I just got the replacement pump today. All I had to do was peel off the serialized label, attach it to the email correspondence about the failure, and mail it off to them. They shipped back a replacement pump and I was good to go. Yeah the week turn around time was inconvenient, but completely understandable. Now to pull back out the PITA cheap Hallmark pump I dropped down there... sigh, maybe it can wait till that guy fails ;) .

Great product
Many reviewers have mentioned that it has a Franklin pump but mine was labeled with a different brand. It does appear that it is made by Franklin or maybe the company that supplies them. I was a bit hesitant to replace my own well pump, but once the old one was pulled out and flat on the ground across my yard, I was able to duplicate the 23+ year old assembly of the one we had put in when we moved into our house. It has been over a month and this one is pumping along and doing a great job. There were clear instructions and lots of details on how to add other items to complete the installation. By the time I was done, I had a well that pumps better than it has in years and I am comfortable in replacing it all again next time!

Great little pump so far as long as it lasts a 5 years Plus I will be happy couldn't beat the price Update MAY 23 2018 as of today 3 years and still going strong! Update May 22 2020 Still going strong! Update Jan 04 2021 Still pumping Real stoked ! Update Jan 19 2022 still going pumped lots of gallons with this! So final post the pump was ruined by my neglect last year ! 2023 The inlet was clogged by a build up of sludge ! in my mind this pump would have lasted fine had it maintained it now I know to pull and clean the screen every few years I did buy a new franklin to replace it But if your on a budget I wouldn't hesitate to buy this pump setup! good value for the money! I spent twice the money for the franklin hoping to get twice the life! However,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I thought getting a name brand pump would be worth the cost, it wasn’t. This pump was used for part of a year in a deep well, it lasted just a little longer than the warranty and failed completely. It was only in use for a matter of month. Do not buy, cheap no name pumps have last longer.
