I am one of those people who just shouldn't use knives in general. I cut myself so often that even my children are desensitized, I barely get an upwards glance anymore when I gasp in the kitchen. My family merely says, "How bad is it this time, Mum?" I've tried mesh gloves, just using scissors, buying pre-cut everything, just about anything to not use a knife. When I came across this finger guard, I was cautious but optimistic that it would solve my problem. When I opened the package I was impressed with the craftsmanship and with how sturdy it felt. I tried it on and grabbed a knife. It was life changing for me. I can now cut without fear of injuring myself! The plate is thick enough to feel like it is a real barrier between myself and the blade but it is not cumbersome at all. This is a handy little too for anyone to have in their drawer.

A finger guard like this is really unnecessary for most kitchen cutting tasks. However, some people are afraid of knives, have not been trained, or may have special needs that make it appropriate. This is a simple device, with a 2-1/2" wide by approximately 1-1/2" shield, and a finger ring that is spot welded on. As long as the spot welds hold up, it should last a long time. I tried it out of curiosity. Cutting large items (lettuce, meat, etc.) I could use it instead of the flat, front parts of my fingers, to guide the knife and make uniform cuts. But on smaller and irregularly shaped items (garlic cloves, onions, tomatoes, etc.) it was difficult to hold the item being cut. If you are interested in this type of item, it is pretty inexpensive to try. Watch a few videos on kitchen knife skills, and you may find it unnecessary.

It does the job! Great item

Tried this guard after seeing something similar on an ad which I could not locate later. The actual shield portion is sturdy enough and should do the job intended. But the finger hold is quite thin and flimsy. I put it on and squeezed the finger hold to get a firm attachment and it quickly bent back out of shape while I was trying to slide veggies. Tried several more times with same result. In my mind not worth a glance.

I bought this as a gift for someone who cut their finger badly while prepping veggies for dinner. She hasn't cut her finger since. It does take a little getting used to, hence the 4 out of 5 stars. But great once you get used to it.

Finger Guard was very thin and flimsy. It had scratches on the back out of the box. The finger ring was spot welded crooked. At the same time I bought a guard from a competitor that came in a nice box. They sent 2 guards for $9.99 The metal was almost twice as thick. No scratches. Finger ring was welded straight. Much better quality item.
