One Day on Our Blue Planet: In the Savannah

Gorgeous!
I don't understand why more people haven't reviewed this book. I absolutely LOVE it. The language is simple yet elegant. I think it introduces words that are more descriptive than the usual - look at the little lion cub, see him run - kind of thing that you might usually expect from children's story-picture books . Instead there is a level of ease and sophistication in its language, without being too complex or difficult. It opens with 'As the morning sun rises on the African Savannah , a lioness and her cub emerge slowly from their secret den.' Gorgeous! I think my baby will have a much better vocabulary as a result of me reading this to him; The illustrations are just lovely. I get value for money on the imagery as almost every page is choc-a-bloc with beautiful scenes of the safari and a host of different animals. You can have good discussions about them with your child. The night time safari illustrations are particularly breathtaking in my opinion. When I open this book to my baby and show him the pictures, he stops fussing and stares intently at the pages. He is calm and gurgles as I read him the story. Considering that my baby is just a week shy of 4 months old, I am amazed that a book can hold his attention. I have read and showed him the book over and over again and the result is the same. Particularly because of the language, the book will go the distance as a storybook for older babies and young children. I can't wait until he'll be able to read it to me. My only peeve point is that although the book is well-made, the pages are made out of some type of thick paper material. I am assuming this was used because it brings out the best in the illustrations and has a natural earthy feel when you touch it, reflecting the nature theme of the savannah. However, my son keeps reaching for the pages and I sometimes wonder whether the page is durable enough to deal with his hand-grabbing enthusiasm or, when he is older, sticky fingers. But thats about it really. More please Ms. Bailey!! Maybe something in the caribbean's tropical forests, or about the turtles in Trinidad that returning to the beaches they were born to lay their eggs...

Pretty and educational book for toddlers on wildlife
This is a lovely book for a toddler. It teaches about a variety of animals from the African continent. Lovely illustrations. My three year old loves it! Will explore the others in the same range.

How disappointing
Very disappointed I had to wait so long for this to arrive. When it did it looked very shabby and there was a tear in one of the pages. I can't give this as a present but shall give it to the little girl anyway.
