I love this book
I love this book, and especially enjoyed this printing.First, I like that it is broken into three volumes, which fit more neatly on-the-go, and which don't attract so much attention.Second, I like the timelines, chronologies, maps, etc., that are included.Third, I never felt like I was reading a translation -- the language was natural and beautiful.

Excellent Quality of a Classic!
I will not write a review for War and Peace aside from saying it's an absolute classic that is a relevant today as I am sure it was upon release. The treatment received by Everymans Library is absolutely stunning. The binding is solid as a rock and I have no doubt these books will hold up for many many reads. The only caution I can give is the fact there is a lot of French thrown into the text and there is no glossary in the book to translate it. An easy solution for this is to either look up the translations online, or do as I am doing and purchase the four dollar Wordsworth Maude translation and use their glossary at the back to help with translation.Although the lack of translations can be somewhat annoying, I simply must give this set a 5 star review still because the quality exceeds anything that should be available at this low price point. If you love War and Peace like I do, make sure you get this set because if you don't and it's not available one day I know you will be kicking yourself.NOTE: The first image I posted is not of this product but the cheaper Wordsworth edition which I recommend getting as well to aid you with French translations... Also it's handy to have a 4 dollar copy of the book to take with outside the house to ensure you can keep these more expensive copies in pristine condition at home.

SOOOO Many words, so little substance
Look, I set out to read the classics thinking "they have to be classics for a reason, right?" But no, no, no ,no ,no ,no. This book will talk your ear off for 300 pages about several different peoples drawing rooms, all to build up a storyline that can only be described as important, yet somewhat anecdotal. I am sure that when people did not have distractions of the modern day, this was a great thing to keep them busy. However, even once I got to the main part of the book, I was nearly bored to tears. This is not just me being upset because this book is too long, or too hard to understand. No, I understand that this book is supposed to show how there is no real hero in real life. How the jumping from mind to mind of each individual character shows the rich experiences of life in a society that was just reently plaqued by a great war. Quite frankly, Ayn Rand does this very well in Atlas Shrugged. Or, you can read the novel Jubilee, or you can read Day of Tears. It explores the same sort of context. If it is the hardcore change of characters in an otherwise unchanging landscape you are looking for, I highly suggest you go watch Goodwill Hunting. Or, you could perhaps read the wonderful novel A Discovery of Witches. There is a lot of change in that particular series, even if some readers do think it is a bit juvenile. Look, for my money, this book is a fantastic sleep aid, but if you are looking for something super exciting, look somewhere else.

Classic Read
For 47 years I’ve yearned to read War & Peace and have finally done so. The first 60% was brilliantly entertaining. But then I could not help but notice that Tolstoy would periodically belabor certain points in a repetitive and redundant way. A point succinctly stated may be clever. But if restated 4 or more times it becomes insultingly annoying. This Tolstoy seemed to do ever increasingly as the book progressed. Nevertheless, it was grand ( though I enjoyed Hemingway’s “For Whom The Bell Tolls” much more. I do recommend it as a must read when all is said and done.

Count Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace is one of the world's greatest novels!
Count Leo Tolstoy (`1828-1810) took five years to write War and Peace in the 1860s. The author of such classics as Anna Karenina, The Cossacks, Resurrection and countless other stories and novels is rightly considered the greatest Russian author. War and Peace is a vast historical novel portraying Russia's monumental struggle against Napoleonic invasion in 1812. Four families dominate the long novel. Beautiful women like Nastasha Rostov, her dashing husband Prince Andrei, the philosophical Mason Pierre and over five hundred other characters populate these crowded pages. Everyone should read War and Peace who claims to be a lover of world literature. The Everyman edition is handily separated in three easy to hold and carry three volumes and they are included in an attractive box. I have read War and Peace many times and have been deeply enriched by it! A true masterpiece by the master Tolstoy!

Epic is the right word for this book
This was by far the longest book I have read, with the exception of the Bible. My preferred genre is hard science fiction, which is a far cry from the war/romance drama in this saga. I do have to say though that this is without a doubt the best example of writing that I have ever happened upon. The style and flair employed by the author in unparalleled in my experience and alone makes the reading of this novel well worthwhile. I highly recommend it to anyone and am glad to have had the opportunity.

3 Volume Hardcover Maude Translation
I wanted something more portable than a single book. Each volume is a nice portable size (i will try to upload some scale pics). They are very nice books with cloth coverings and a tassel bookmark built into each book. I couldn't find it in the details anywhere when I bought this, but it is the Maude translation (again, this is the 3 volume hardcover edition... i don't know if all war and peace reviews are lumped together or not). I saw some complaints about the paper thickness, but the thickness on this edition is great, not thin at all. Those were the question marks I had when buying and I was not disappointed at all.edit after reading some: The only drawback for this version is the lack of translations for the French snippets. Also, I think the punctuation could use some work (this probably goes for all the translations though).

3 Volumes easier to handle
The splitting up of the book into 3 volumes makes it easier to handle, and often single volume versions compress the text making it harder to read comfortably. The books themselves were in good condition, but the slipcase was a bit bashed, but it was secondhand so acceptable.

Well worth it
The media could not be loaded. Very well worth the steep price.Things I liked:- the quality of the box was outstanding; super sturdy, thick,- box design is beautiful, the artwork and the placement; I usually throw away boxes but this one is a work of art in itself- came shrink wrapped which was nice because these books doe not have jacket covers- liked how at the end of the books, they included a list all of the titles in the Everyman’s libraryThinks I don’t like:- no jacket cover- the box came a bit damaged on the edges- silk ribbon looks like it might unravel with minimal use, over a short period of timeOverall thoughts on this publisher:If you love this story or you want an edition that will last for generations, pick this up. Everyman’s Library just does a wonderful job at making timepieces. Seriously, there was a lot of time and energy into thinking about all the little details that really makes all of the difference- colour coding of the cloth that the book is bound in,- the spine of the books all line up, with or without the jacket on- edges and paper are uniform- good size to hold with one hand for reading and for travelling too- the chronology of the writer at the beginning- the introductions were well written- font is easy to read

Best Fiction Ever
I first came across this book on Amazon when my brother wanted to purchase a book (decline and fall of the roman empire), after having purchased that book, War and Peace was recommended to me, I quickly read the cover and decided to purchase it just a few days later. The book remained on my shelf for about 3 months until one day I was sitting bored at home and decided to start reading books. I picked up War and Peace after skimming through a couple of my books and in just one day I read about 30 to 40 pages, and after two weeks I had finished the entire book. There are two things that kept me reading this book; the first thing that kept me reading this book was the philosophy. The philosophical part of the book had me lost in the pages to the point that I wasn't even aware of my own life and was just focused on the words written in the pages, and afterwards reflecting on what I had just read was soul quenching. The Philosophy within the book was so strange, it was as if I knew what Tolstoy was trying to point out, but it just needed to be written down so that I could comprehend it, if that makes sense.Second were the characters within the book, Prince Andei, Pierre, Dolokhov and many others. In the beginning, not being familiar with the characters, I was a patient observer, then after continuing my reading and seeing the characters develop and go through their struggles in life allowed me to sympathize with them despite being disapproving of them at first, and although their lives were set in the late 18th and early 19th century, I related to them in every way because their struggles were no different from our very own despite the times, like when Pierre (SPOILERS START HERE) was somewhat pressured to marry Helene and then later finding her ungrateful, or when Dolokhov after being shot despite being the kind of person he was felt love for his sister and mother and towards his friends, and especially Prince Andrei who so vehemently wanted to carry out revenge against Anatole for what he did to him but then sympathizing with him when he saw his leg cut off. (SPOILERS OVER).Now who is looking forward to reading this book, don't spoil it for yourself if you haven't already and read it from there, believe me each moment will be like wondering what will happen next.

The Russian Jane Austen?
I purchased War and Peace to break the monotony of reading academic texts. Turned out to be a very good move. Tolstoy writes with a Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Stephen Leacock (for you Canadians), Charles Dickens intelligence, compassion and wit. After two weeks I am halfway through this famously long book. Easy, and likely better, to read in pieces - like a best-ever cake, it's too rich for one go. There is a business opportunity here - each character seems to have at least four versions of their name - "you can't tell the players without a program" - I for one would sign up for a digital guide. Engaging characters and epic story, great insights into human souls and behaviors, rewarding purchase and read.
