This is an excellent "tactical" pen for the price
This is an excellent "tactical" pen for the price. It is not the cheapest offering in this category; but at the same time it is much better than other "tactical" pens costing three or four times or more.Things I like about this pen:I prefer pens with a cap, to protect my pockets from ink. This cap screws securely to the pen by the means of machined threads. There is also an O-ring which seals the cap when it is screwed all the way on.Use of "tactical" pens as self-defense tools pretty much demands a grip in which the thumb folds over the top of the pen. Most "tactical" pens out there are sharp oor pointy on both ends of the pen, making this grip impossible. In contrast, the top of the Black Fly pen is gently rounded, making it a safe and comfortable place to position the thumb.I'm a huge fan of lanyards, so I'm very glad there is a hole through which a 550 paracord can be passed for a lanyard. There is just the right amount of knurling and other milled textures to provide an excellent grip without tearing up the pocket.I like the matte black finish on the aluminum.Things that could be improved on this pen:After a month the screws holding the clip to the cap started to loosen up. I solved the problem with a bit of Loctite, and I suggest that every one who owns this pen do the same even before the screws begin to work loose. Even better yet, I would like to see Black Fly apply a droplet of Loctite before sending these pens out. Many people don't happen to own Allen wrenches. If the screws on the clip are going to be an issue, it would be nice to indicate the correct Allen wrench size someplace in the documentation or on the box. Even better, just include a small Allen key in the box. After being removed from the tip of the pen (where it fits very securely), the cap does not fit tightly over the tail end of the pen. There should be some sort of detent so that the cap clicks securely in place on the tail of the pen when writing. Or even better yet, the cap should screw onto the tail by means of threads like there are at the tip of the pen.Final conclusions: This pen has a lot of great features that surpass other pens that cost $80 or $100 or even more. But there is still room for a bit of improvement. For that reason I give the pen 4 stars.

BlackFly Tactical Pen Advances My EDC Readiness
When I showed my new BlackFly Tactical Pen to my girlfriend, she said "where's mine?"!After watching several YouTube video reviews and reading even more, I chose it over others that were definitely more expensive and had more "features." While not the least expensive of the many choices out there, it's not so expensive that if I somehow lose it, have it confiscated by an over zealous TSA agent or make the mistake of lending it to someone and not getting it back, it won't hurt so much to replace it with another just like it.BlackFly chose not to make this pen a virtual survival tool sporting flashlights or knife blades. It does two things and does them very well, making its $18 price a good value. It's a defensive aid that, with some training, can help you extract yourself from a grappling fight when you're not able to maintain a safe distance from an attacker. It's also a great, reliable, quality writing instrument. The pen has a serious look to it and is designed for a firm comfortable grip whether you're writing or fighting. It has a solid, precision feel to it when changing the cap from one end to the other. Its "cap" end is gently rounded instead of flat yet it's still comfortable when your thumb presses on it in a defensive grip. The cap is machined with screw threads that secure it when in "fighting" mode but simply pushes on quickly and solidly when changing to pen mode. There's even a hole for a 550 paracord lanyard to be tied which will enhance its handling/carrying utility.Since I already carry a purpose-built folding knife and powerful mini-flashlight, I don't need or want extra functions to complicate my "pen." The simplicity and aircraft grade aluminum construction minimized the pen's weight making it less of an addition to my already well-filled cargo pants pockets and allow me to carry it inside a Polo Shirt clipped between the buttons.I recommend this tactical pen. You can spend more but in the case of BlackFly's Tactical Pen, you won't get more.Tom W.

A kubaton that writes
This is a solid, sturdy, well-well made piece of gear. It's essentially a kubaton that writes, (It writes well, by the way and is pretty cool in business meetings...not your standard office pen, by any means. People will ask you about it.) Easily concealed and I see no reason why this pen would not be allowed on an airplane--it's a pen, after all. As far as self-defense goes though it's a tool, not a magic wand. So unless you already know how to defend yourself it won't do you much good. But in the hands of a trained martial artist, it could be quite effective in certain situations.
