Is the "Shade setting" a Time or Temp setting ??

I don't know. Red light comes on while preheating. Blue light comes on when it has reached temp to cook. I'd let it reheat for a little longer before I start cooking. Blue light goes off. Blue light comes back on when waffle is done to your set setting. Hope this helped. I like my waffles crisp so I have mine set on almost 7. Play with what number you want it to be at. Thicker waffle batter turns out better than thin batter.
