Nice value- you get more than you pay for. Good weight, sturdy, great board and piece size. Pieces are cast in a substantial satin finish plastic and have very minor blemishes but not on obvious parts. More than adequate >1 mil board lays flat- roll up is great feature to have more real estate plus it fits into a nice carry bag, which has one zippered pouch for each army, an extra queen of each color, zippered pouch for clock and/or or notebook etc., pen slot and business card sized clear sleeve. If you are upgrading from a smaller "toy store" set with a cardboard board then you will totally enjoy playing with this set. It could easily be the last set you ever buy if you do not abuse it. Even the outside box has terrific easy to understand basic rules and great visuals that are useful/enjoyable to the beginner or novice. Overall very nice set. I would buy again. Re: Some have commented about the odor of the vinyl board. I have a more than average sensitive sense smell (I ate a whole foods raw plant based diet for 14 years in a row!) and while there was a slight odor it only lasted a fewhours. I set it up on my granite kitchen counter, left it there with the pieces and the next day any odor was down to zero.Update: A few days later: Correction: there IS more odor when you move the board, especially if you bend or roll it. That stretches the "vinyl substrate" and releases vapor. It is not a problem but it is noticeable. When I have a moment I shall wash it gently with soap and water to see what happens.

I'm new to chess, have had a few of the plastic piece/paper board chess kits, but I wanted something better. The pieces and the board are bigger than the cheap games of course, and in my opinion, perfect sized ("standard size" according to pros).The pieces are of good weight, I wouldn't want them any heavier or lighter...glad they are weighted as they are.The vinyl board is like a diner place mat. If you keep it rolled with the squares facing out, it lays pretty flat unrolled, with minor "arching" at spots. I wasn't a fan of the green at first, I considered other colors, but green seems to be the standard, and now that I've played on it a few times, it's not bad, I guess the contrast to the piece colors is nice.The case is what I expected for a vinyl-lined nylon fabric case, it's nothing fancy but nice enough, and the layout keeps the pieces, board, and my clock secured well.No complaints on the pieces...no chips, weights and felt bottoms in tact...there were some dark smudges on the white pieces, which rubbed off with a wet paper towel and some elbow grease.Yeah there was a strong vinyl smell at first, but I left the board and the bag lay open in a sun-lit/window-lit area for about a week, and the smell has dissipated. Now it just smells "new"! :)For an affordable, basic, and full size set with "real" pieces, this kit is great. Would buy again.

Since I love playing chess, after moving to the US I felt strongly like I am lacking a chess board/set. I decided that this time I will be getting the best chess set out there and will just take care of it very well. I came across this one and though it seemed a bit pricy, I stayed true to my initial plan of getting it.When it arrived I was super excited and a bit scared that it will not be good enough and I will regret my decision of wasting money on a chess set, but fortunately all my fears dissipated as soon as I opened the pack. I was so happy!!!This chess set is practically perfect. The pieces are heavy and well-balances, the roll up chess board lays perfectly still and flat, and the bag is just on point for transporting it from one place to another. The set includes extra queens of each color. The bag has several sections for pieces, the roll up board and for other items you would possibly want to carry with you.I am very happy with this purchase, though it is a bit pricy, but it does worth every penny!

I like this chess set, it is a major improvement over the cheap tacky set I had laying around. I think that some of the reviews commenting about the smell of the vinyl game board are exaggerating. There was a mild yet distinct scent when I first took it out of the package, but after a couple of hours it was no longer detectable. The board lays reasonably flat; I only took it out of the package today, so there are some light wrinkles that have been flattening out over the last two or three hours. Nonetheless, it was perfectly playable out of the box.That brings me to the game pieces. They are made of plastic, and sometimes have little bits of excess molding hanging off edges of the piece's articulations. The weight distribution is skewed toward the bottom, which gives the pieces a satisfying feel when moving them on the board. They are not extremely heavy, but in my opinion the weight is appropriate and facilitates a smooth game-play experience. The pieces have a (somewhat coarse) green felt bottom, which looks nice and feels nice on the board. However, the piece is hollow, so it feels like one could poke through the felt with enough force. I highly doubt this would be a problem for anyone, I just have a preference for a solid base.The carrying case is utilitarian yet still fairly attractive. It has the pouches for pieces and game clock as advertised, and there is a stretchy band for holding the rolled-up board as well as what seems like two slots for pencils. It is dark forest green and has an adjustable black strap.Overall I would say this a handsome, good-quality, mid-range chess set. I think there is room for improvement, but I'm still satisfied with my purchase.

the pieces have a nice wieght to them, are easily identifiable, and baord roles out easily. The mat is curled but if you leave it under books or a carpet it stay flat, even after rolling it up again.

True triple weighted. Just a very nice set all around as far as I can see. I’m glad I bought this. High quality in all components. Fits my DGT 3000 clock no problem.

Very good product. I highly recommend it, the quality of the board is good, pieces are good and resistant. Very easy to carry as it comes with its case.
