Not sure I understand your question. If I remember, the plant came in a nice soil mix with a bit of mulch on top? I planted it right away and it’s done great so far. They are slow growers. Just be patient. In its 3rd year you’ll be delighted!

How late in the year can you plant these? Is December too late?

Depending on your zone, but I’d say yes. They are cold hardy but if the ground is semi or full frozen, the roots won’t take.

Can this survive in zone 8?

I had hellebores in Virginia and in Boston and they have done very well in those areas. Am not sure about zone 8. Check with your local nursery
