Hydor740 Universal Pump, 740 GPH - Original Seltz L40

The good, very quiet pump. I am running 2 of these (red ones, same pump) in the wet/dry sump of my 120G aquarium. both of these together make hardly any noise. They are replacing a RIO pump that has about the same flow as these 2 combined at it is very noisy compared to the L40s. (as the aquarium is in our bedroom, being quiet is a plus!)The only bad thing I have with these pumps is the way hose fitting tightens around the hose. Unless you use a very thick hose, the tightning nut does not do anything. I had to place some extra hose piece down in there for the nut to actually tighten. (Don't want the hose to blow off the pump!)The "othjer" bad - ordered this through Amazon warehouse deals as used - Very good condition. It is being returned as the impeller is not glued to the magnet, so it does not pump any water, just makes noise from the loose impeller. So sometimes the returns they resell were returned for a reason, they are broken (& not properly inspected before reselling to someone else.).

The pump is advertised as working in and out of water. However its working out of water is a bit of a lie as it can't prime itself and can't pump any air. This means it only works out of water if it is located below the water levels that it is both pumping from and to, and even then you have to manually prime it. In most cased if you ever lose power you will have to re-prime it. So yes it technically works out of water, but not in the way an average person would expect a pump to work.As for the pump itself, if mounted correctly it is very quiet and seems to work well. Since it is an induction motor pump it only has one moving part so I expect it to last for quite a while.I find it hard to just give it a 1 star because they exaggerate that it is an external pump. Certainly for an external pump I would give it a 1, but for a submersion pump I would give it a 4. I suppose I should be lenient and give it a 3.

I don't know why this pump has so many negative reviews. I've had a L20 for nearly 2 1/2 years now and never had a problem, so I'd say that qualifies as being reliable and a good value. I use it submerged in a bucket to transfer reconstituted RO water to my aquarium for water changes. From the floor to the top of the aquarium is just over 4 feet, which the pump handles just fine and it hardly makes any noise. I'm sure there are more powerful pumps out there, which some people may have a need for, but I don't. All I have to say is that compared to all the work I would've had to do lifting buckets of water by hand, this thing has paid for itself many times over!

We have a water feature which this pump applies to very well, our water feature is very difficlt to get parts for, so when we saw this we thought why not give it a try. It was perfect. Thank you so much, we really enjoy our water feature as do our local birds, and to know that we can contact you when we have a problem is wonderful.We would have no hestation in reccommending this product and web site to anyone needing assistance as we did.

This pump is a hardy and affordable little pump that I am using to circulate my aquarium saltwater from the sump up to the display tank. It has been running nonstop for about 6 months and it is very quiet. It feels like it is pretty solid and durable and well-made. It pumps very strongly, but I actually thought it would pump a little harder: it is pumping water up about 5 1/4 feet, and while it is enough for my tank while set to ":wide open" I thought that I would have to 'tune it down' because I thought it was going to pump much harder. That being said, This is the smallest pump that I could use in my tank to pump water up a 5 1/4 foot rise.

I just bought my 3rd Hydor pump. The first one lasted over a year before failing. The second one was purchased this past March and failed last week (less than 4 months of use!). I use this for my turf algae scrubber in my small reef aquarium. I probably should try another brand, but this one fits so nice in the space and plumbing I have set up.

I use these pumps with my skimmer in my aquarium. I bought a new one last year at it only lasted a year before it stopped. I ordered a new one. When it arrived the motor ran but it did not pump water. I asked amazon for a new one which arrived the next day. I plugged it in and at the max setting it pumped about a 5 gallon per hour. It is supposed to be 185 gallons per hour at the max setting. The first one I owned lasted about 3 years. It seems quality is on the decline with Hydor. I will not buy another pump from Hydor.

Pump does not have enough power to be mounted externally above the water source. Only buy if you are going to submerge the pump.same as in the stores, just cheaper.

Its doing a great job. Its submerged in the tank with a diy overhead sump filter (soon to have plants in it). This is the most effective filter set up I've found for my freshwater aquarium. Eventually it will be a 'closed' ecosystem with clay pebbles and plants in the sump.

It is quiet and powerful. I just thought it'll have a drain flexible pipe included. Nonetheless, works great.

A year and a half of 24-7 use and its going strong. Silent once you get it set up right.
