Love this ink stick! Comes in a nice wooden storage box. Has a very pleasant scent to it. Makes rich, smooth, dark ink that is perfect for calligraphy and Sumi-e painting. I am just learning calligraphy, and have only had 2 lessons. I found this ink very nice to work with.

Good ink stick, it's easy to get black ink that I need. The color is a beautiful and subtle blackness with slight and good-smelling aroma.

I enjoy grinding my different inksticks and keep looking for new kinds. This pine soot based inkstick is top quality. The stick grinds very smoothly, no little scratches from impure bits like some cheap sticks. The ink from pine soot tends more to a kind of matte finish when dried. I can't speak about painting with this ink, but for calligraphy it is an outstanding choice. The carving and writing on the stick is very classy. Has a traditional fragrance--I think it is like menthol to my nose--but it is not heavy or annoying. Comes packaged well in a wooden box. Highly recommend.

This may become my favorite ink stick. I liked the way it ground and the quality of ink that resulted. It is a hard stick so spend time peacefully grinding as you prepare to paint. Note that comes in a wooden box to protect it between painting sessions.
