Not a really memorable retelling
I guess I thought this would be a really traditional retelling of the old folktale, but the version Steven Kellogg created, although whimsical, is not what I had in mind to see.

For the quirky at heart
Honestly, it's one of my favorite children's books of all time. It's ridiculous and hilarious and creative. The illustrations are detailed and fun- it's a delight to see things in there that you missed the first time because there is so much going on. Definitely better for older children. Highly recommend for a fun, quirky read.

,
This was one of my favorite folk tales growing up.I'm not sure I like the layout of this book, in comic style, I think it's a little hard to read, but my nieces enjoy it and I haven't yet found a better edition of JUST this folk tale.

Mr. Tom, You're Silly.
This is a retelling of the classic folktale about a young man who agrees to marry a young maiden, but only after he had found three people who are sillier than she. Thus he begins a quest that leads him to all sorts of strange places where he meets many silly people. But in the end, the suitor learns that it is he who is the silliest of them all.The illustrations are wonderful and really make the story come alive in a real, but humorous way. I love the cat, he has some of the best lines in the whole book.I loved this book because of the old folktale, but it's still a great story for modern kids. My younger siblings enjoyed the story, even though they called parts of it strange.

A wonderful classic folktale for children and adults
As one of the classic folktales, this story is fascinating both for children and adult. Children will find the story amusing and easy to follow. The story is a good selection of the noodleheads.

Too Silly even for kids
I've really enjoyed Kellogg's Pinkerton books, but this one's a dud. The best thing about this book was the wonderful illustrations and the only reason I gave it 2, rather than 1 star. I think my friend's 6 year old child put it appropriately - the book is weird and doesn't make any sense. It was so absurd and ridiculous as to be frustrating...not even my 3 year old found it fun. Maybe 4 or 5 year olds would, but no one younger would understand the story since it makes no sense really, and anyone older than 5 would think it too strange to enjoy. Kellogg should stick with a good thing like Pinkerton.
