Textbook that reads like narrative history
I studied Russian history in graduate school. This book served as my go-to secondary source for decades, and still does today in its 9th edition. Its scope is truly magisterial. The style is profound but is also easily accessible. Really, you should probably take the book in small bites rather than trying to blast through. Savor all those facts and critical interpretations. No branch of history is neglected. It's all here. Economic, political, cultural, military, religion, literally everything finds its way into the volume. Important political and cultural movements are discussed with intelligence and insight. Also, it is thankfully thin on woke revisionism and seeks to understand the history within its relative contexts.

Excellent overview of Russian history
I highly recommend this rich and detailed account of Russian history from Middle Ages before it existed as a nation state through the early Tsars, Russian empire, the Revolution, Communism, its collapse, Yeltsin and Putin. This is a great primer for context around current events or if you enjoy reading Russian literature by Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky.A word of caution, this book is a university publisher text book, so it's for readers who are smart enough to handle academic writing without getting overwhelmed.

Best one volume history of Russia
If you want to better understand why current events happen the way they do then history is your best course of study. This volume is the gold standard for Russian history written in English. From christianization to the cold war to Putin this is the volume from where to begin.

Outstanding!
I had this as a college textbook and it is the only book from college and grad school that I kept! It wasn't even part of my major! Now my teens are reading it as part of their HS curriculum. It is extremely readable and very comprehensive!

Lousy Binding for a Very Expensive Book!
Having read several earlier editions, I eagerly awaited this Ninth Edition, and planned to use it for a class I teach this Fall. It is the best concise, one-volume work on Russia. It achieves both balance and readability. BUT, the binding was so weak that pages and pages fell out of the book. Alas, I should have checked it carefully first, because it is not returnable after a few notes I made in it before the flaws were revealed. I purchase a lot from Amazon, so to be fair, this is an unusual lapse for this company. * Not sure about maybe reverting to an earlier edition; wondering how my students will be able to deal with this binding issue in Fall 2023!

Bound Incorrectly
For a textbook that was $100 it was bound horribly. Every other page is falling out and I’m only 3 chapters in.

too long worded
way too detailed in each chapter.
