Texas: A Historical Atlas

Excellent
This is a great book, both in terms of its writing and the photos, charts, maps, and other images liberally spread throughout. I've been using it as a history and geography book for my middle-school-age son, and he's enjoying it pretty well. Highly recommended.

Beautiful maps and diagrams and a lot more!
On a recent trip from Dallas down to the coast north of Corpus Christi we stopped once again in Goliad and did a little sightseeing. The lady at the state park there said about Goliad: "Small town, big history." Exactly right. In the bookstore at the Presidio, I bought a book about Goliad (Roell's 'Remember Goliad!') and just finished reading it. Remember Goliad!: A History of La Bahía (Fred Rider Cotten Popular History Series) Good book — but it really reminded me how little I know about that historical geography. So I ordered this historical atlas. When it arrived, by happy coincidence I opened it directly to the four-page entry on the massacre at Goliad. Reading the text and reviewing the maps and diagrams on those four beautifully laid out pages clarified in a few minutes a dozen questions that I'd been asking.I was expecting a book of maps like some of my Civil War atlases but this is much more: maps aplenty, and good ones, but there is explanatory and narrative history text, plus diagrams, photos, timelines, and more. The book has won awards as a reference book, but it seems like much more than that to me. I think I will continue to pick it up and read it for pleasure and insight.I ordered the paperback. It's heavy and well made. The maps are beautiful and the entire book is beautifully designed. Kudos to U of Oklahoma Press for a job very well done on this one.

If you even think you want this, buy it! (You won't be disappointed)
This is an outstanding reference. I was optimistic when I purchased it, and within the first seconds of scanning through it, it exceeded my expectations. As I've had time to dive a little deeper into its rich content, I'm even more impressed and happier with the book. If you are a student of Texas history or just casually interested in getting a better picture of the flow of historical events in and around the state, this is a must have. This was worth every penny, and I wish I'd had it handy as I was reading Fehrenbach's "Lone Star" history.Unqualified 5-star recommendation for this "Texas: A Historical Atlas"

Book Lives up to Title
Book given to family members for use in exploring the state they have moved to. It provides an education for the homeschooled kids and satisfies the family's focus on learning as they explore their location. Buying it used saved money and the quality of the material presented is most helpful.

I have been reading Lonestar; A History of Texas and Texans by T.R. Fehrenbach. I kept trying to find good maps from the periods of history the book was covering but couldn't find anything that was helpful. This book is a wonderful addition to my study of Texas. (I am a California transplant and I want to learn as much as I can about my adopted state of Texas). Not only are there a plethora of maps but there are also charts and graphs and lists that make it easier to see the growth and change and history of everything Texas. I highly recommend this book as an adjunct to your Texas study unit for High School or for anyone wanting to know more about the greatest state in the Union.

Attention Texas History Buffs - great book!
This was a gift for my daughter-in-law who teaches 7th grade Texas history. It was on her wish list, and she was excited to receive it. She is reading through it, and throughly enjoying it.

This book covers a lot of material. It's full of new maps covering the history, geography and both modern and natural features of the state. It's also got some photos, illustrations and images of real old historic maps. Whether you just want to know what Texas is all about, or, like me, you're a born and bred Texan who thinks he knows a ton about the state, you'll get a lot out of this book. I consider this a must-have reference for any Texan's library.

More than expected.
Thought that it would be a short history of Texas through maps. This book is more than that. Texas through history to a detailed depth.
