Great field guide 📒
Bought this field guide as a present for my naturalist mother and she really loved it. Would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in mammals and live or visit the tropics.

Excellent resource
We just returned from a trip to Panama and Costa Rica that I had purchased the book for. I had little time to consult books as we were so busy but it was helpful as background before the trip and as a resource during the trip. It is a beautiful book and I will keep it. As an all around resource and book to have along two other books were helpful. One, Watching Wildlife: Central America (Lonely Planet) and another Birds of Costa Rica (photographic volume) were very helpful and easy to carry along. Others brought Birds of Panama and used it alot - very heavy to carry. The guides used the laminated wildlife "brochures", two I got on amazon but there were others available down there. There doesn't seem to be one great resource for wildlife in the region but as we were traveling with naturalists and with the above two sources, we were pretty happy.

Abundant information and good illustrations. I wish the maps were included on the color plates instead of being put with the information in the systematic section. Upon looking more thoroughly through the book, I have discovered that the number of species covered in the color plates is only 293, not the 346 that it claims. Overall, it is a pretty good book especially for the low price, though it doesn’t cover all the species that it claims to.

Great book, bad binding
If I were just covering the book I would give it a five -- hands down. It is a great book and easy to find the animals you see. However, if you A) live in a tropical environment B) handle this book at all, the binding falls apart. How sad that such a good book looks like it is 10 years old after a few months. I've now purchased this book twice because of the content only to find the binding fell apart both times.

Field Guide to Mammals
Used this in Central America. I really enjoyed the images, and could look at mammals (bats) and see the resemblance to properly identify the species. I would add to my personal field guide collection. A must for any biologist studying in Central America.

Too big & too heavy for a "Field Guide". ...
Too big & too heavy for a "Field Guide". Not practical so I ordered another book,' Watching Wildlife Central America'... haven't received it yet.

Very "Text" Bookish
I was disappointed when I received this book. It is a "text" book. Very dry. Being fair, there is good information in it if you can stay awake long enough to read it,chapter by chapter! I did learn there is more than one kind of skunk (mofeta) - that was amazing! For a college student, this book is perfect. Had I been able to thumb through it prior to ordering it, I would not have bought it. This will be heading to our local library!

comprehensive work
Comprehensive, thorough listing of mammals of the area. Quite an achievement to capture it all. Good illustrations. Species descriptions include English and Spanish names, descriptions (with distinctive characteristics emphasized), distribution (with range map), status and habitat, habits of the animal, where to see it, and sometimes other comments, about things such as changes in taxonomy. Due to the diversity of the area, it's pretty heavy; so a book to leave behind in your room instead of carrying in the backpack.

Mammals in View
The Guide is clear and concise and contains plates of the mammals described in the book, including colour variations. While it has the technical detail required by readers requiring in depth accounts of each mammal, it is also user friendly for the general reader.

Mammals of central america
Buen libro, buenas ilustraciones, en lo personal creo que le faltó colocar las escretas y los cráneos de las especies que menciona, de ahí en fuera estoy encantada
