I really enjoy this book. I bought it primarily as reference material (I'm a novelist, though not yet published). It turns out, though, that I just enjoy looking at the book even when I'm not looking through it for specific information. It's well-written; a very important feature of any book, but particularly books like this, which deal with touchy subjects. It is difficult to strike the right tone since angels are part of some people's religious beliefs and fantasy for others. I thought the author did a great job at being respectful and informative without painting angels as either fact or fiction. (I personally believe in them.)I was slightly disappointed that none of the illustrations were colored: they are all black-and-white. They are still very interesting but I do think an occasional splash of color would have really enhanced the book quite nicely. Other then that, it's excellent. If you are interested in angels as fiction, fact, or any other reason, I think you'll be glad you bought this fairly comprehensive book.

When I ordered this item, I didn't quite know what to expect - but I was absolutely blown away by this book. Of all the books on angels I've ever read, it's the most comprehensive, the most objective, and the most beautiful. The author covers just about anything and everything that has come from any tradition that embraces them, and the book is copiously illustrated with appropriate paintings, manuscript illuminations, statues, and any other form of visual depiction of these intriguing but elusive beings. I strongly recommend this book not only for angel enthusiasts, but for serious scholars as well.

A fun book for referencing different angels from across the globe. I purchased this for my sister so she could get a better understanding of what different angels there are. I read the book before giving it to her and I loved the bits of trivia I was able to get from it, and she has enjoyed it as well.

Rosemary's dedication to exhaustive research is evident in her fabulous book of reference. If readers want to know anything about angels--myths, origins of lore and facts--they need look no further. Guiley's book is jam-packed with information that provides many key points and leads for further investigation. Her book was extremely helpful in my research. If you want to explore the realm of the mystical and paranormal, this is a great place to begin.

I bought this as a xmas gift for the wife this year. She has immediately made use of it at several points. She's used it as a reference list to compile background data on angelic figures throughout time and various cultures. From those religions/cultures it references (Judeo-Christian, Hebrew, Islam) she is pleased with its comprehensive listing however she does indicate that it lacks sufficient citation at times to pull from either text/verse or other scholarly/historical documentation. Will definitely pick up subsequent volumes - highly recommended !

Sorry, but it is not OK to put to name a book to make it appear to be something other than what it is. I bought the book based on the title, even ignoring the reviewer who said there wasn't much about angels -- because I reasoned that given the size of the book, he must be wrong. Well, if you count the pages in this big fat encyclopedia that are actually about angels, it's a very small percentage. Instead you can read all about the life of Joan of Arc or about the founder of Findhorn Garden, etc., etc., etc., mostly more boring (to me) subjects--so boring I can't remember what they were--and not why I bought the book. When nowadays you can't often look at the book before you buy it, a misleading title is taking advantage of the buyer. Since when do publishers/authors do that so brazenly? (I feel better if I imagine the editor was on vacation and the assistant editor was hung over and not thinking clearly.) And I'm amazed that my reading all the reviews on Amazon did not reveal this deceit. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 so people would read this review. I regret I did not return the book -- I hadn't yet leaned that Amazon makes that fairly easy. And remind myself of the many good buys of the past. I hope I help some other innocent with this review.

My brother loves researching mythology, history, and basically anything that an encyclopedia is useful for. He was particular about the style of book, and I spent a while choosing the right one. It covers a good amount of material and has nice images to go with it. I haven't looked through it much, but he loves it, so I recommend it for anyone interested in detailed angelogrophy.

Great encyclopaedia, has tons of info about the angels. Fascinating.. but I just wish that there was more internal active linking in the ebook, as there's such a wealth of information contained.
