Light and Shade in Watercolour Hardcover – 7 Mar. 2019

Going big on this one! I’m an experienced oil painter but admit to knowing zip about watercolour. It’s not a medium that’s interested me much, tbh, however felt the time had come for a new challenge. After an extensive search of the options I finally plumped for this option, which arrived today and, at first glance, it looks like I’m not going to be disappointed. Admittedly I’ve not read it in detail but it’s easy to see it’s a comprehensive offering of both the ‘how to’ techniques plus the where’s and why’s in terms of any artistic interpretation. It also has some interesting exercises to get used to the medium, the colour and their tones so, all in all, I’m excited about this new arrival and it adding to my artistic armoury. For the avoidance of doubt I don’t know the author, don’t know anyone who does and only learnt of her during my search for a worthwhile book to help me with my endeavours. Time on the brush awaits.

Hazel Soan's Light and Shade in Watercolour is a beautiful book, with Hazel's lovely loose style watercolours at every turn of the page. Capturing the light and shade (in the right places) in a watercolour painting is vital for any aspiring watercolourist to learn. Hazel explains the subject in a very straightforward manner with helpful practical exercises at the end of each chapter. I'm currently learning to paint with watercolours and this is something I need to get to grips with. I've found this book very helpful and would recommend it to others learning or wanting to improve their watercolours.

A very helpful book for someone beginning to get to grips with watercolour, I like the clear information about techniques given throughout the book. It helps a "new to watercolour" artist to achieve some good effects.

This is my favourite purchase in 'how to' watercolour books. I love the short concise explanations accompanying the full colour illustrations that helps you to look at light and shade in a different manner.. It certainly encourages you to give it a go for yourself. Well worth the money

Great book, easy to follow and lots of information.

Art is all about playing with light and atmosphere (as well as colour and form) and this book tells you everything you need to know about it in watercolour. It is well laid out, easy to read, very informative and inspiring. Her range of subjects is impressive too - urban landscapes and landscapes, people, animals, flowers she paints it all. There is well over a hundred beautiful paintings to demonstrate all the information. She gets it, she's a master of the medium and at one with watercolour - and above all she helps other people get it too! I admire many professional watercolourists, but Hazel has officially become my watercolour guru. I feel so enthusiastic about experimenting and having fun with my own watercolours now, with beautiful books like this to guide me on.

Bardzo ładne wydanie książki. Piękne ilustracje, zastosowane kolory, niestety wszystkie ilustracje są szkicowe. Sprawiają wrażenie jakby powstały na szybko ,"na kolanie". Mają taki poziom szczegółowości jak ilustracja na okładce. Nie nauczysz się tu konstrukcji rysunku, czy budowania planów. Wychowałam się na książkach Michała Suffczyńskiego i tutaj odczuwam duży niedosyt. Jeśli dopiero zaczynasz, to się zastanów czy z takich ilustracji skorzystasz.
