How long will this spin?

One of the reviewers said that they got it to spin indefinitely. They said that the put the stand on top of a cheap magnetic stirrer that they purchased on Amazon. Clever!

How heavy/dense is the ellipsoid top? does it feel hefty or light in the hand?

It felt relatively heavy; likely as heavy as you'd expect it to. The thing is the bottom was really light and didn't seem to match the top.Also, I had somehow assumed the two were magnetized but they aren't so I wasn't going to get the egg to spin on the base like it's pictured for the life of me. I felt it was totally not worth the money so I sent it back.

Spun on it's side, the metal egg changes position to rotate on one end. It spins a surprising length of time on the plate designed for this purpose. I am very satisfied with my purchase of this item.

Amazon sells inexpensive, magnifying, hand-held mirrors (with rims). Would that work as a larger base for the ellipsoid top?

This egg spins on any smooth surface. It is a dense object. So it could break a glass surface if directed at a large angle to the surface. Any smooth surface you can direct the ellipsoid top toward will support a satisfactory spin experience, provided the surface survives the impact you have delivered.
