Toddler grandson is enthralled!
When our grandson was just a few months old I would show him a video of Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. It would immediately calm him down and I would talk about each instrument as it played its part. To this day it is his favorite video. As he learned to look at books I went searching for a book that would go along the orchestra. To be honest, I didn't have any expectations for this book but I was soon proved wrong! He loves this book! I have to read it over and over every day. We discuss the different instruments and the animals and play "can you find...?" games. The rhyming story is cute and short, but what really captivates our grandson is the pictures. The illustrator is Tibor Gergely, who illustrated Scuffy the Tugboat (my childhood favorite book). Our grandson studies those pictures for a long, long time.NOTE: if you are looking for a book to teach your child musical instruments, you may be disappointed. They aren't exactly "anatomically correct" and one is even mislabeled (bagpipe is called a fife). That doesn't matter to me (I changed the wording from "fife" to "pipes" and the rhyme works okay).

Good book about music and animals
My 13 month old son loves the inflection of the voices I use when reading about each animal playing their instruments. He loves this book and I love it too . It rhymes in the right way .

Kindle Edition is Poorly Executed
In the electronic version of Animal Orchestra, original art meant to stretch across two pages is split up in favor of alternating one full page of art and then one page of text. This changes the difficulty level of a book for young readers and gives consumers an inferior product. Originally, text appeared with the art on the page. Animal Gym, perhaps the best comparable title, maintains the look and appearance of the original. In the rush to make these titles electronic, Random House seems to randomly farm out this work to different groups and have no care or sense of quality control over the collection. Nor does anyone seem to be revising or updating previously botched jobs (like this one) or grossly outdated product like the earliest (and, arguably, most important titles) like Saggy Baggy Elephant, Pokey Little Puppy, and Tawny Scrawny Lion. All of these, we can only purchase at low resolution, without examples of end boards or a proper rear cover. Also, as these emerge back 'in print', no one appears to be getting ATOS levels for use in schools. Random House, using my scanner and Photoshop, I can do a better job than this. Give me a call.

Great except for some incorrect instrument IDs
My almost-2-year-old boy asks us to read this book to him multiple times a day. The illustrations are good, and the story (to the extent there is one) makes sense and is engaging. The illustrations are probably too busy for a really young toddler, though. Lots going on here.I question some of the descriptions of instruments, though. An animal wearing a wrap-around tuba is described as "trumpeting", and an animal playing what appear to be bagpipes is said to be playing the fife. Perhaps these terms were interchangeable long ago, but for now it's not accurate and just a slight bummer to have to change the text as you go.

A classic rhyming book!
My son memorized this book when he was 3 and I make sure to give a copy to my grandchildren. It is full of animals and a great rhyming storyline. Can’t go wrong!

animal orchestra
Ideal for reading with young children, not too long, then fine for children to read by themselves. An easy to understand text and bright illustrations to hold attention.
