Riftpoint is the smallest of the series, the straps is not an issue, but the pack itself will be rather small, even more so on a big guy. Please consider the larger of this style, which is the Riftblade. At twice the size at 30 liters vs the Riftpoint at 15 liters.

The website states 9 (L) x 0.5 (W) x 9 (H) inches, or 22.9 x 1.3 x 22.9 cm

Does it have a cushion at the bottom of the laptop sleeve to protect against drops?

The sleeve on this small backpack is not padded on the bottom as you are requesting. If you want something more with a designated laptop sleeve, I would suggest the Maxpedition entity Bags such as the Their Tech sling Large (10 liters) and their Entity 23 Backpack that would have a designated laptop sleeve with padding all around for protection, including on the bottom.
