100 Knits: Interweave's Ultimate Pattern Collection

Great looking patterns
I usually shy away from purchasing knitting pattern books as I typically only end up liking 1 or 2 patterns out of the bunch. Not the case for this book. I absolutely love the look of almost all patterns in this book. I have bought the occasional Interweave magazine from the local craft store and thought I'd take a risk purchasing this book. I do not regret it and can't wait to start some of these projects!edit: I am a woman who knits for myself and mostly for women. This book is 99% patterns for adult women. I saw another review that was disappointed in lack of men/children patterns, so I figured I'd add that info on to my review too. Suits my needs great, but maybe not for everyone.

Wow! What a collection!
Interweave knitting patterns are invariably wearable, clearly written, and easy to follow. This book contains 100 of these fine patterns. Each one has a clear photo of the front and back of the garment, often with additional shots of details of the garment. So often knitting patterns are photographed so artily that it's hard to tell what the finished garment will look like. That is not an issue here. Each pattern includes all the usual information (gauge, stitches, yarn requirements by yarn weight ather than brand, etc.) plus notes about construction. There are traditional knitting instructions written in standard knitting terms, plus schematics with measurements and charts for stitches.Fitted garments are offered in a wide range of sizes, typically 32 to 50 inches, but sometimes smaller or larger sizes than these are included. There is a page of abbreviations at the back, but this book is for experienced knitters. There are no basic knitting instructions. What else is not included? Well, there is only one sweater for a man and no patterns for children. Some accessories (hats, socks, cowls, scarves) are for men or are suited to unisex style. There are some truly unusual patterns. For example, there is a pattern for knitting two pairs of socks together, one from the top down and the other from the toe up. Then you divide the socks at the toes and graft the toes. I can't imagine why you'd want to do this, but it's intriguing. All the patterns are clothing, though. There are no home decor patterns.Other than that, it's hard to think of anything that is not represented in this collection. Yarns from laceweight to Aran weight are included. There are sections for hats and socks, scarves and shawls and such, cardigans, pullovers, and tanks and tees.Raglan, drop sleeve, yoked, and set-in sleeve designs are included. Shaped, straight-sided, and A-line sweaters are represented. You'll find color work, cables, textured stitches, lace, and lovely combinations of these techniques. It's hard to imagine that anyone could look through this collection without finding something perfect to knit.I own a lot of Interweave books, and I already have a handful of these patterns. I'll still have a lot of trouble choosing which pattern to begin with. If you own a good stitch dictionary, a good technical book for fitting, and basic instructions if you need them, then this book could complete your collection of essential knitting books.

Mostly charts, not written out patterns
So many knitting books have patterns you'd never try; you buy a book for a couple patterns you otherwise would never see. This has so many good patterns I can't wait to try! I thought it was a little strange that out of 100 patterns, there was only one man's sweater. You'd think there'd be either a few or none at all, but over all they look amazing! Keep in mind there are so many patterns, they aren't all written out word for word. When I started knitting, my patterns wrote out what to do every row ("K5, P2, repeat," things like that). This is all chart!

Excellent one stop resource
This new collection of patterns includes a whopping 500 pages of contemporary garment patterns for hats, shawls, cowls, sweaters, and socks. I was delighted to find a whole section in the back for what the editors call "t-shirts" - lighter weight and either short-sleeved or sleeveless sweaters perfect for those of us in warmer climates.

Must know how to read charts!
I was so excited to get this book, but was really disappointed that many patterns are charts only, no written instructions. I do not know how to read charts, therefore the book is almost useless for me. Unfortunately I wrote my name in the book and could not return it. I wish the description indicated that there were very few written patterns and I could have saved my money. The book does have nice patterns however, so if you read charts it will be great for you.

Not my favorite.
I went through this book page by page twice and didn’t find things I wanted to knit. I really like Interweave patterns usually and I certainly recognized some of the garments, but I just didn’t like their selection for the most part. It’s a beautiful book but from my point of view. It is disappointing. I am an older woman so maybe it is a generational thing.

I've tagged about 90%
I've often bought knitting pattern books that I end up hating. Not so here. As implied, these are the best of the best. I don't knit accessories much. But I've already put post-its on many, many of the sweaters I plan to knit. Few are purely simple. All seem well designed and executed. If you are subscriber, you already have these patterns. If you use Ravelry, you'll recognize them as some of the most frequently appearing patterns on line. The book is cheaper than a subscription, and saves wading through the least usable of Interweave's patterns.

Modern, doable patterns, I love this book!
This is a great book! I have had an Interweave Knits mag subscription for years and most patterns I like, but not all. This book has captured many of my fav patterns and many more in modern, classy styles. I am extremely happy with my purchase and I feel this book is worth every penny!

Knitter's Dream
A 100 patterns selected from Interweave Knits Magazine. Huge variety of stitches and techniques are included but enough in basic stocking stitch for the novice not to feel left out. There are patterns for socks, hats, scarves, shrugs, shawls, pullovers, cardigans, and t-shirts. They were selected on the number of 'likes' they received online so it is not surprising that there are a lot of patterns that make you want to reach for the knitting needles. This substantial hardback runs to Just over 500 pages, clear explanations, charts, and diagrams to show the measurement of each garment component which makes substituting your own yarn easy, if you want to.I was given this book and feel sure any keen knitter would love this as a present.Check out the 'Roosevelt Cardigan' at the interweave.com site as a sample of what you might expect.

Lots of patterns if you like knitting with circular needles almost none if you don't
Nice looking patterns. Not a great range (lots of cardigans, no dresses/skirts/coats) but some decent designs. Unfortunately what it doesn't tell you is that there are only about 3 patterns in the entire book that don't require circular needles. Really? I have been knitting for over 50 years and I don't even own circular needles. I have DPNs but not circulars so the whole (very expensive) book is a complete waste of my money.Nice patterns if you like circular, decent illustrations, could have been a useful book but nothing in the blurb or the "Look Inside" prepares you for this circular needles crap. Now trying to work out who I can give this to for Christmas. Major disappointment.

Great book
Love the book. 100 interesting, well written and very varied patterns for a wide range of sizes. Shame there were no patterns for skirts. Otherwise very happy. Real value for money.
