Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt (1999-05-01) Review: Gripping and gut wrenching! - The sadness, the poverty, the lack of food or a roof over their heads was almost to much to bear as I kept reading and looking for the pot of gold over the rainbow. How anyone of the children survived is a miracle in itself. Review: A Must Read! - This book is a must read for those interested in Irish stories. I originally read this book as loaned from a friend. I had to buy my own copy for my library.

Gripping and gut wrenching!
The sadness, the poverty, the lack of food or a roof over their heads was almost to much to bear as I kept reading and looking for the pot of gold over the rainbow. How anyone of the children survived is a miracle in itself.

Great Storytelling
The author has an exceptional talent for storytelling. He has a humorous, matter-of-fact way of detailing moments of extreme hardship from his Irish childhood, and some of the few joyous moments as well. I felt as though I was in the room with the characters watching the stories unfold.

You can survive about anything
The book made me so sad for this family & I saw how cruel kids could be. But something good came from it & at times it was humorous.

Humble and masterful
Frank McCourt wrote this book about his early life in N. Ireland over many years; in longhand, on legal pads. What resulted was is one of literature’s great works. Beautiful.

Great Irish/American Novel
This was such an enjoyable read I ordered the rest of the trilogy, “’Tis” and “Teacherman.” McCourt was a great writer who wrote the Great Irish/American Novel, however autobiographical.

Having heard the film was very dark, I was nervous when our book group selected Angels's Ashes. What a surprise and delight it was to discover the writing style and wit of Frank McCourt. Even though his life is tough and at times sad, he is able to describe it with a mix of finesse and honesty that doesn't drag you down. He captures the Irish view and manner of speech deftly. The moment I finished this book I immediately ordered 'Tis his next book and Teacher Man. Some books I give away after reading, but this ones a keeper and I will re-read it in the future.

A good read - very sad in places and also very funny in places. Certainly gives a vivid description into the difficulties faced by people in the 1930s and the strength of character that got them through the tough times.

I'm finding this hard going, have put down and started a couple of times now, I will try again, before I see film, but it is not grabbing me too much....... probably because of the bad memories it evokes
