Interesting
This is NOT the "Robin Hood" story I grew up with, but it definitely captures the era in which "Robin Hood" tends to be set ... an England that is quasi-feudal, with very clear "class" delineations, just aching for a hero to set things right. Unfortunately, I measure all "Robin Hood" stories against the one I first read and still have in my book collection. This version, while interesting, just does not match my favourite Robin Hood saga. It is, however, a very good indicator of the interest folk continue to have in this fabled "Man of the Greenwood" ... given how many variants there are of the tale. Some of the chapters pay homage to other renditions, while a few seem to be unique to this book.

The Definitive Robin Hood
I first read this book in 1950 and have re-read it perhaps twenty times, it is that well written. It was written at the beginning of the last century, so be prepared for an old fashioned style, and for the characters to "speak forsoothly." And be prepared to shed copious, aching tears when Master Robin dies at the end.

It's a beautiful, alternative rendition of Robin Hood that is a breath of fresh air for those who only know Howard Pyle. Definitely worth reading if you're a fan of the merry men of Sherwood Forest and their leader.

This is classic reading. I was very happy that it became my duty and pleasure to introduce to my grandchildren this book as a step to higher learning.

Very well written
Lots of detail and drama and the characters are developed. My only complaint is that it doesn't have enough of Will Scarlet.
