Here's how they made that magic
It is very rare to find an outstanding book about the making of a much loved, modern-day classic film based on a much loved Pulitzer prize winning novel and yet here it is . Being a Lonesome Dove-aholic, I was more than thrilled to see this book in a bookstore recently. I checked my phone for Amazon's price and was pleased to be able to save about $20 here. This book provides a fascinating new avenue to go back and re-visit the magic of Lonesome Dove. It is filled with interviews with dozens of the cast members asking so many of the questions that I've always wanted to ask: "favorite memories" "what was it like when....", etc. The insight and recollections shared add so much richness to the background and understanding of the film. I want to go back and re-watch the movie for the thousandth time to look for particular instances referenced or remembered. You get the sense that this project was a very special time for everyone involved either from their tone or because they came right out and said so. Perhaps that is one reason why the popularity of the movie endures and the magic of the story never seems to fade.I've often said I would have taken any role or job in Lonesome Dove to have been a part of this magnificent film, down to playing one of the pigs!!! This book is the next best thing. The reader is taken from the book being optioned for adaptation to film, to pre-production to casting, all the way through the filming and into post production and it's success during the awards season that followed. The lavish illustrations are some of the most stunning aspects of the book including: the many full color photographs of some of the iconic props from the movie such as the "Hat Creek Cattle Company" sign that Gus lashed to the side of the wagon as they were leaving Lonesome Dove for the cattle drive that stated "We don't rent pigs", and the actual faded Lonesome Dove painted on the storefront of the Dry Bean. No fan of this movie will want to be without this fascinating inside look at the making of one of the greatest movies of all time.

Gus, Call, Newt, July, Pea and the whole nine yards - Yeeehaw!
For the happily-obsessed Lonesome Dove fan. (you know who you are, right?) This handsome 12" square coffee table book contains wonderful sepia photos that affirm the Old West vibe, and reminded me of how much I loved this one-of-a-kind mini-series. And, mo bettah, there are endless large hero shots of the various memorable props from the film. Deets' quilted pants, the Captain's hat and boots, a hand-written note from "Gus" to "Clara", and a signed-by-everyone copy of the shooting script. And much, much more. The book is thoughtfully designed, and contains interviews and behind-the-scenes revelations and tall tales from the originators, stars and crew. There was something about Lonesome Dove that made us think that the whole thing had been made "just for us" -- and this book uplifts that same familiar cozy feeling. Good vibes and trail dustabound -- and we are the lucky readers.

An Essential Purchase For Fans Of Loneseome Dove
Don't be confused - despite the similar title and similar cover this is a completely different book to "A Book Of Photographs From Lonesome Dove" (with the brown cover). They're both beautifully presented matching coffee table books with different material. The "brown" book is mainly just photos. The green book also features photos (a different selection) but alot more written material and notes and is probably the best choice if you can only afford one. They're both the same size and if you can find a nice "wild west" style wooden box to put them in alongside your DVD/BLU-RAY of the series then you've got yourself a lovely box set. The photographs themselves are absolutely stunning. If you're a fan of the series these two books are an essential purchase!

Companion book
I bought this book for my father-in-law for Christmas. We had purchased the book of photos for him a few years back. He is a big fan of Lonesome Dove. He enjoyed reading the stories. However, it took him all of about 30 minutes to read it & I think he was craving a bit more. But, it is a beautiful book, would be great for the coffee table. If you are wanting more history into the making of the movie and the characters, I might consider purchasing another.

It was a birthday present
My dad, a HUGE Lonesome Dove fan and avid reader, had a birthday coming up, and like most guys, anything he needs, he goes out and buys himself....I was up the creek, so to speak. Then one day, I got an email from Amazon.com about this book. The more I saw, the more I knew Dad would love it, so ordered it for him. He was thrilled when I gave it to him, and said he had read the whole thing, cover to cover, in less than a day. I now have it borrowed, and even though I don't have quite the time Dad does to read, I have enjoyed it immensely. Well worth the money you will pay for it, if you're into westerns.
