Not sure about suggested age... 8 months to seven years? was considering for my almost nine and almost 11 year old. is this too old for this bolt?

8 months-7 Years is too young. Depending on how responsible your kid is, age 8-100000 is what I would suggest.

Will this sphero work on carpet?

Yes, the sphero bolt works on carpet. However it works better on wood and travels more distance for the same program. My daughter added a video to show the difference. check it out: https://youtu.be/ga4tAH9OPBc

Can this sphero also be driven manually using a phone or tablet? the mini has this feature and was hoping to find it on the more advanced models. thx

Yes, we use Kindles in our classroom to run all the Sphero robots, including Bolt.

Is this compatible with the normal sphero app?

Greetings - Thanks for checking. You can use the Sphero Play and Sphero Edu app with Sphero BOLT - -thanks for checking! https://www.sphero.com/about/play-app/
