It does cover over the top. It cannot be suspended from the ceiling. A four poster bed is needed for the best display of this canopy. My granddaughter loves it

I don't remember what the instructions might have said, but I definitely would NOT use a washing machine. but maybe hand wash in the sink and lay to dry. Better yet, I would just use febreeze for fabrics
