Great joystick no micro switches because they break, Very solid controller
This controller is so high awww quality, lives up to SNK's name brilliantly. They did not include the micro switches on the joystick because they break, I had an original NeoGeo CD controller for my AES, and this controller is far more accurate than a 4 micro switch joystick. I can pull off super moves on Garou: King of the Wolves and all the King of fighters games on my NeoGeo mini international edition. I typically use the built in controls on the mini, but on the rare occasions I play it on my TV the controller feels nice and heafty in your hand. The joystick has a bumpy textured surface where your thumb goes which my original neo geo one did not, also the whole controller has a bumpy grippy feel, I love the white one, got it shipped and sold by Amazon for 13 bucks while the black one was 16. Guess higher demand for the original color. All you need to know is the buttons are clicky, the joystick is just as easy and doesnt have microswitches to break, and it performs very well, if you want to play 2 player, yourself on the built in controls and friend on controller, or if you want to be able to plug it into your TV and play console style without having to try and control it with the built ins. Than you need atleast one controller, if you have the Japanese version I would get black as your color, if you have the international version like mine it has enough white on it that I would say the White controller matches it best.

An amazing game pad!
I ordered this gamepad to use as a second player controller for my Neo Geo mini, but it's so marvelous that I'm tempted to order another to use with an adapter for general retro console use. I was really on the fence about getting it - I don't know when I'll see my coworkers again, much less if anybody will want to stand close enough to play two player on this tiny screen. (There is an HDMI port, but it's hard for me to use.) I didn't know what to expect of the weird thumbstick - whether I would like it at all - or what the build quality would be. After all, it's an inexpensive pad compared to a lot of other "modern retro" pads. As soon as I pulled it out of the box, I had a good feeling. The controller is incredibly solid and weighty. I like the Retro-bit Genesis and Saturn controllers, but they feel weightless and flexible compared to my memories of the originals. This one, by contrast, feels like it weighs as much as an Xbox 360 controller - a good thing in my book. It's solid as a rock; it feels like I could stomp on it on cement without so much as scratching it. (Note: I am not recommending you do this.) The buttons are clicky and responsive. I'm terrible at fighting games, but this pad makes me feel almost competent. Pulling off sweeps, 4-6 moves, or 623 / 421 moves feels incredibly natural. I've always preferred Sega/NEC disc-based d-pads to Nintendo-style pure cross d-pads, but this is a new evolution. My only complaint is that the Neo Geo is a four-button controller, so this won't work with many SNES or Genesis games. Which isn't a fair complaint. But if somebody were to clone this with shoulder buttons, I'll be first in line to buy it. Until then, I'll keep using this on any game that will allow it. It's a marvelous pad and an amazing value. Don't miss it.

very good but not perfect
it is high quality controller that is great for shooters and action platformers but horrible with fighting games because the d-pad/stick doesn't behave the same way the original's did. if they shortened the range of motion and gave it arcade stick gate switch clicking action for precision you would have a five star controller on your hands. i really wanted to give this 3 and 1/2 stars but there is no option for that. it does have thick plastic and proper weight that most usb retro controllers don't have. make the d-pad like the original Neo Geo CD version and you have a 5 star controller that you can sell for 35-40 bucks for sure. also they could just improve it and still sell it for 25 that would be mondo cool bro spectacular!

Playing KoF 98 as I type this!
There are things about this controller that I knew about coming in: the analog joystick, the rearranged button layout, the USB C connection. I read the reviews and thought, "it can't be nearly that bad". Well, for me, I was right. Yes, the omission of the micro switches is annoying but it controls fairly smoothly! Blazing Star, Metal Slug, even KoF 98 (special moves and all) I was able to play an enjoy. The button layout doesn't bother me much, and I can understand why they did it: there's a wealth of fighters on the Neo Geo, it makes sense to have the weak and strong attacks on the left and right respectively. A constant complaint I've read on these controllers are its supposedly cheap feel? I'm glad to see that was not the case. It feels solid in the hand and has a nice weight to it - very much like the original Neo Geo CD controller! I bought this controller solely for my Retropie setup and it works perfect (albeit with USB adapter). Really digging this controller, and pick up a second one real soon 😎

A very solid, well built controller that turns the arcade machine into a home console
This is overall a well made controller. I had a Neo Geo Pocket Color so I know what the original microswitches were like and this is honestly just as good to use and a lot quieter. If you are a hardcore purist I could see the complaints on that and the different button placement, but this stays true to the revisions they made with the mini arcade console and it delivers on adding the functionality needed to turn this into a home console for your TV. The cord is generously long and it gives you that authentic AES home console feel at a small fraction of the price it would cost to get the real deal. For what you are paying for the overall package I see no reason to complain.

It'd be really great if the NeoGeo classic mini supported 3rd party controllers, however, you're forced to use these ones. It's not that they're bad, but it wouldn't be my first choice. They've basically mirror'd the design of an old NeoGeo CD controller, however, those controllers used microswitches and was therefore more like an arcade stick in portable form. These controllers may look the same, but they're not using microswitches, they use a standard analog stick, which isn't a great way to play these kinds of games. I'd much rather they use microswitches, and if that was really was not an option, then just use a D-pad instead of trying to mirror the look of another controller at the expense of usability.
