A Course in Microeconomic Theory

Great
I am only a few chapters in for self study to prepare myself for graduate school, but this book already deserves 5 stars. It is a bit mathematical so those with low mathematical maturity should maybe go for a less rigorous book. But that being said, if one is highly motivated I do not see why one could not go through this on ones own.Kreps has a very clear writing style. I have read a few of his books and many of his papers. He makes things very enjoyable.

Seems good.
It's a too little soon to give a detailed review. What I can say is that it reads quite easily for a graduate level text.

good micro text w/ good game theory.
Great grad school micro book, with an extra focus on game theory that Mas-Collel doesn't have. # need more words# # #

It is not a new book. Maybe unused but it is 20 or more years old book.

Interesting approach to microeconomics but lacks of many important topics
Among microeconomics graduate textbooks this is probably the one with the most alternative approach. I say this because it has an extensive part dedicated to game theory whereas it doesn't pay attention to classical topics in microeconomics such as demand theory. While many would argue that this is a plus, I say that even if you don't like standard topics like General Equilibrium Theory, they ARE microeconomics, thus I don't think it is appropriate to ignore them (I am well aware of the fact that GET is covered but basic demand theory, a must to study GET, is not, and if you compare the part about GET to, say, Mas-Colell, this is like ignoring it) .And it's really sad that people comment that they are unrealistic models. Every model is unrealistic, otherwise we would not call it a model: they are simply tools used to describe particular markets or institutions. Specifically, GET is useful to analyze competitive markets. And yes, mathematics is foundamental in economics, especially for microeconomics, and this is another flaw of the book: microeconomic theory is basically applied mathematics, one cannot study it without dealing with tons of equations, proofs, theorems and so and so forth. You may not like, but that's the way it is.But overall, the book is very readable, and it also has a "philophical" approach which is very interesting. Kreps likes to talk a lot, unlike, say, Varian in microeconomics.

Good for its time, but not now
I snatched this book up and used it as the main text in my graduate game theory course many years ago. It was quite unique then in presenting game theory in as social theory, not just mathematical theory. But it is now way out of date and many more useful texts are available.
