Kaili Blues

A Twilight Zone journey
Kaili Blues starts ordinary and ends with dreamlike realism. A journey to rescue his missing young nephew turns into a time twisting odyssey of future wrapped into the present.

Addict
Trapped in a vortex of time and memories, you will escape dazed and fatigued. By chance, if you catch a glimpse of a forgotten love story as it flashes by, you will sadistically let yourself be whirled back for more. Consider yourself lucky if you are one of the many who hate this movie.

The Long Take
Leaving TOUCH OF EVIL and THE PLAYER in the dust, watch this film for the bravura 41 minute take that travels from motorcycle to boat, to truck and back to motorcycle. Stunning. The mystery of the film is worth trying to figure out too.

Wish I'd seen this before Long Days Journey Into Night
I bought Long Days Journey because not only was there 'the long cut' but it was in 3D. What I wasn't expecting was that the film captured me totally. The two halves of the film and the interconnect between the characters, and the sadness just below the surface - its perfect in almost every way. I heard of Kaili Blues after Long Days Journey. Both use the location of Kaili, which figures prominently in both. They both feature a 'long cut'. I anxiously got Kaili Blues hoping for another experience like Long Days Journey. Its not. Yes, it is dreamy and almost like being in a trance, but its missing, to me, the story and the depth of the characters of Long Days Journey. And the long cut is, unlike in Long Day's Journey, just a part of the dream and not the huge reflection of the first half of the film. The main character wanders through it and then comes out the other end. I enjoyed it, but it didn't hold me the way Long Day's Journey does, which I have now watched almost a dozen times. It never disappoints. This one is just not as good.

Not much story, just an almost unbearable amount of beauty.
Wow. No reviews in over a year, huh? Guess I shouldn't be surprised. This is one of the most underappreciated films of recent years. If you're looking for something that moves along at more than a crawl, or has a comprehensible, linear storyline, you'll want to kick in your TV screen well before this is over. Don't say I didn't warn you.But if you've got the patience and you're on its wavelength, this is a rapturous experience. So much physical beauty and tantalizing mystery in every minute, especially in the sorta-climactic scene, a single, unbroken tracking shot that wanders through a rural village for... I don't remember, 30 minutes? 40 minutes? There's a bit where the camera follows the protagonist onto a little boat and across the river to the houses and lush woods on the other side that made my breath stop, it was so gorgeous. If I could have that minute or two projected onto the wall of my living room in a loop, I would do it in a heartbeat.
