Useful but small hole in handle
This scoop does work. Most mornings I can restart my fire with the coals this scoop sorts from the ash (if I don’t have enough coals that is because of the wood I used). The hole that is at the top of the handle is too small to hang on my particular fireplace tools stand so I tried drilling a hole but the metal is thin and did not take well to drilling. My solution is to use a tip tie so the scoop can hang. Overall, I would recommend getting this tool.

Good for sifting Ash, could be a bit larger and longer
I bought this shovel so that I could sift through ash in my woodstove to separate coals. This function works pretty well. The handle is a bit on the short side, but I just don a pair of welding gloves and all is good. Would also be a bit better if the sifter was a little deeper so the coals wouldn't fall out so easily. The shovel does give off a noxious odor when I use it. I'm not entirely sure product is meant to be used when the coals are still hot, even though photos show it being used that way. Perhaps as I use it this smell will stop happening, akin to breaking in a new woodstove? IDK. Overall works great, and gets the job done. 4 stars. Not perfect, but not bad.

Helps with separating ashes from coals
There aren't a lot of similar products on the market for coal keeping for wood stoves. I searched high and low, I read every review, and finally decided to give this one a try.We have used our wood stove for our heat all winter long in Minnesota for 5 years now. I don't consider us experts but pretty darn experienced. I have 4 children and as they get old enough they are taught fire safety and how to use the stove. That includes things like how to build a fire, how to clean out the ashes, etc etc.As novices we relied on using pre-made wax burner things to start our fires, but they get pretty expensive when you have to make a new fire almost every day. We've tried our own homemade fire starters and they were ok but not good enough to utilize our time.Pretty much every morning in the winter the fire has died out and we need to get the house warm quickly. So I wanted to find something suitable for separating and saving coals from the ashes during the morning cleanup so we can reuse those coals to start another fire. Using the coals saves time and money. You'd think that using a standard ash shovel would be acceptable, but that's actually a real pain in the butt and makes a big mess. Most ash shovels have much longer handles, and you cannot tip and shake and pour the ashes well enough without ash dust going out all over your room. I wanted something smaller with holes so I can sift and shake right IN the actual stove box. You'd think a coal keeping device would be common but they're not and this is one of the few available on the market, but that's ok!!! We're actually REALLY happy with this thing and I'm glad we got it! Every other coal keeper I looked at just looked like a metal kitty litter scoop, all of the other ones looked cheap and flimsy. But this one is really nice and good quality. The size is just right for a standard indoor wood burning stove. It's solid and heavy duty enough that I don't worry about the heat from the coals ruining the metal. The holes in it are adequate sized... maybe not perfect, but hey, beggars can't be choosers and it's not a problem. Sometimes I have to give the thing a little shake to sift out the ashes from the larger coals but isn't that the point? That's not a problem for me at all and this is designed well enough to get the job done!2 of my older children use this regularly and they also really like it and find it easy to use.It immediately became useful for its sole purpose: to separate the coals out from ashes so we can reuse the coals to start a new fire. Can't ask for more than that. Thanks for the solid and sturdy, well made, hard to find but necessary product for those of us who use wood burning fire for our heat!

Great idea, mediocre execution
Great idea, but the shovel sides are too low. You can only scoop a tiny bit, maybe 1/4 shovel full at most. Otherwise the coals will dump out once you start gently shaking it to sift out the ashes. Also you need to tilt it back slightly towards the handle for the same reason. When doing that there is a solid area in the shovel at the handle where ashes collect and don’t sift out. Quality wise it feels pretty cheaply made and should cost half what is being charged. However there were no defects in the one I received. I would love to purchase an improved version.

Perfect
This is exactly what we wanted and needed. It works great and it is the perfect size - not too big and not too small.

Just a little too wide
I wish this shover were *just* a little narrower. It's just what I need to gather up the chunks of burnt wood and leave the fine ash behind to be vacuumed up. Only problem is, it's just a little too wide. But otherwise, just the perfect size for what I needed.

Nope
Just looking at the images, I knew it would not be a "perfect" solution, but I literally could not find another product for this purpose so I gave it a try. Performance was even worse than I anticipated. Clearly this was designed by someone who does not use a wood stove. It is just a flat ash shovel with some holes in it. When you scoop ash, you have to shake it to separate ash from coals and get the ash to fall through the holes. The problem with this design is the sidewalls are too low, so most of the contents just fall off the sides. Another flaw is the back of the scoop does not have holes so ash piles up there. If you try to tilt the shovel forward and shake it to get the ashes out of the back area, everything falls of the front-end. It is thin metal, so I easily bent it with my hand in an effort to give it a more curved scoop shape, but it didn't really work. The sidewalls are just too small.- While writing this review and thinking about a better design I had an epiphany: search for metal cat litter scoops. :)
