Does the adhesive mount have to be mounted on a complety smooth surface, or is the adhesive pad sticky enough to adhere to semi-textured surface?

Yes. I have a 2021 Jeep Cherokee, the dash is textured. I used this mount in my old vehicle and LOVED it. I’ve since moved it to the jeep with new adhesive of course, and it’s come off 3 times. All 3 times I’ve cleaned the dash, replaced the adhesive and the same thing happens. My dash has zero smooth surfaces to stick it to. Anyone with a newer vehicle that has a “textured” surface, this won’t work.

I have an iphone6 with a otter case. how thick is the plate attachment that goes on the phone? will my otter case still fit once the plate is attached

I was using a 2-layer Otter like the Commuter series and I put the magnet between the rubber layer and the plastic layer and it worked fine. Then I got the Otter Symmetry series one-piece case, the one that does not have the round cutout for the Apple logo. This case is thinner when installed so it is more comfortable in your pocket, but it is too thick for the magnet to stick properly. I would say that the MagicMount is not compatible with the Symmetry Otterbox case if you want the magnet inside the case. I'm going to try the magnet on the outside of the case, but I don't expect that the adhesive on the metal plate will stick to the case because the case is not a completely flat and smooth surface. It's not a knock on the Scosche, but just an incompatibility with this particular case.

What is the difference between the Scosche MAGDMB and the Scosche MAGDM? They look identical...

I have purchased four of these. I have purchased this SKU both from a brick and mortar retailer and from Amazon. I am 99% certain the B stands for "box" not black, since all of the MAGDMs are black. If you purchase this SKU from a brick and mortar store, it will come packaged in a HORRIBLE plastic blister pack that is EXTREMELY hard to open. If you purchase this from amazon it comes in a 100% recyclable chipboard box with minimal extra paper as well.
