I want to lower the hitch on my new simplicity mower to mate with my old john deere lawn trailer - just turn this upside down?

You can do that, but when many people do this they have issues with the hitch pivoting on the one attachment bolt when they back up. I installed mine exactly the way it is shown in the picture. Installed that way it will not pivot because two bolts mount it. However your hitch must have room to drill the other hole. Hope this helps. I installed this hitch on my lifted golf cart and realized 3.5in drop and 4in setback. You will also have to get a 3/4in pin and possibly drill your implement hole to 3/4in to use the remaining hole and have a positive hookup.

What size u bolt would i need for the two holes on the top? i m trying to attach this to a bar on the back of my atv and need a u bolt to clamp down t

The two holes aren't the top. Those are for a clevis hitch (outer hole) and trailer ball (inner hole). This attaches to the tractor/ATV with a single bolt in the end with just one hole. The clevis, ball and hook loop are what make it a three-way hitch. :-)
