Emotional Value Albeit With "Tech" Bloopers
For someone who grew up being a Superman fan, following his adventures thru the 70's (the glory days) and the 80's, Superman's death obviously had a great impact on me. The writers truly brought out the core of what the Man of Steel has stood for all these years -- protecting the innocent and fighting evil at all costs. Yes, even at the cost of his own life. However, I just did not think that "technically" Doomsday had the stuff to do it. I mean Supe has faced a bunch of other *really* strong super villians, but most of those storylines didn't make it past the second or the third episode. Remember Solomon Grundy? I mean that guy was shown to be stronger than Superman, and virtually unbeatable. But Superman outwitted him and pretty much settled him in one episode. What about Mongul? That guy was at least as strong, if not stronger than Doomsday. But the MOS had no problem putting him away in a couple of issues. And then there was Lobo. The list continues. My point is, Supes has handled some really tough characters in the past without too much of a hassle.Which brings me to Doomsday. I remember when in the first panel that he takes his best punch at Superman, the MOS does not even budge! His expression is unchanged as he says something to the effect, "Oh, is this the guy you call Doomsday?" And the MOS NEVER managed to take a punch from any of the aforementioned supervillians and brush it off the way he did against Doomsday. And yet, while all the others are put away fairly easily, this guy manages to KILL Superman.Agreed that the storyline keeps stressing the fact that Doomsday keeps getting stronger as he continues fighting. AND the MOS gets exhausted and hence weaker as the fight wears on. How so is he able to make an impact on Doomsday towards the end of the fight while not being able to do anything at his peak (during the initial stages of the fight)? The editors might say there was a last-ditch effort from Superman from sheer desparation, but still...Finally, thru the years, we all know how the MOS has used brains over brawn to beat his enemy, usually taking advantage of one their tiny weaknesses. So how come this time he didn't take advantage of Doomsday's huge weakness of lack of flying power? I don't think this aspect got enough play in the series. Also, how come he never thinks of striking at those bony protrusions that hurt Doomsday so much towards the end of the series? All this MAY have been plausible if somewhere along the line the writers had said that Supes was sidetracked with some issue, or that he was sick (Kryptonian "birthday"), or that he was simply not at his peak. But that wasn't the case either. All in all, the adventure was entertaining, with a great deal of emotional impact for most fans. But in the end, I'll say that Doomsday wasn't the kind of villain who was worthy of giving Superman (at his prime) as hard a time as he managed to give him (he killed him!).Well, that was my point of view anyway. However, if you are reading this review in order to know whether you should pick the TPB up or not, I can easily tell you to buy it. It's definitely worth it despite the issues outlined above. Historically, it's a very significant series (even it was a ploy to raise sagging sales), and if you are like me, you'll keep going back to it again and again...

Greatest Comic Book Story I Have Ever Read
To me this is greatest story ever told in comic books for the ones that I have read (which isn't too many though). When this happened Doomsday was a new character I believe who had never been seen in comic books before.Dan Jurgens and others got together and created a villain the likes of which the comic book world hadn't seen since the FFs arch foe Dr. Doom. In fact this is probably why they called him 'Doomsday' because they realized they had created a monster who was on the same level as Victor Von Doom.A follow on set of books called 'Superman / Doomsday Hunter Prey' revealed the unimaginable origin of Doomsday. This is pure genius as far as comic books go.I would like to make a movie about this story and I'll play Doomsday. Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey Spider-Man - The '67 Collection (6 Volume Animated Set) Jonny Quest - The Complete First Season Birdman and the Galaxy Trio: The Complete Series The Flash: Terminal Velocity Silver Surfer Marvel Heroes Long Boarder Mens T-Shirt Green Lantern: Legacy - The Last Will & Testament of Hal Jordan Superman - Doomsday Dust Adult T-Shirt In Black Doomsday Destruction -- Superman Adult T-Shirt Pastels -- Supergirl -- DC Comics Adult T-Shirt

Doomsday Wrecks Havoc
From the very beginning, Doomsday (the bad guy) has the only intent of going berserk, and beating up people who gets in his way. Justice League battles him, but gets beaten. Why is this Doomsday so powerful, we don't get to know. Superman battles him, and as we all know ends up losing the fight. The whole book is nothing but fighting, Justice League and Superman fighting Doomsday. There's no rest. I didn't follow the Superman books when this storyline was written, so I don't know why Superman ultimately became vulnerable to Doomsday. I thought his only weakness was Kryptonite and magic, but Doomsday seem to beat him by brute strength. I bought this book because I heard this was the best selling graphic novel of all time, and it do have historic value, because death of Superman was a big deal. I recommend this book to all Superman fans, because its an important chapter in the character and DC universe.

Not there cover, that I expected...
I received a very well kept version of, "The Death Of Superman", complete novel, but it wasn't the cover that I saw in the pic. I'm a bit disappointed, but very happy, overall.

Was over glad to find this to replace it
"lost" my original copy. Was over glad to find this to replace it. Now it hangs on the wall of the man cave.As far as the story, this is where comic books all ended for me, Superman was killed. All the silly fluff since is...well, silly fluff. I have a sleeve of the images from this compilation. When asked about it I tell folks it's to remind me that even the greatest among us can be destroyed by greed.

Promised more than Delivered
If you don't like your graphic novels with much of a plot then this one is perfect, from start to finish it is action all the way! This is ok to a certain degree but I found myself getting rather bored at the repetitive content of the book, dominated obviously by Superman's attempt to stop Doomsday at whatever cost. However when this is the case for the entire book it doesn't make great reading, constantly Superman is trying to find a way to keep Doomsday down.Upon getting the Death of Superman I was expecting a lot than just one long fight between the title character and his adversary, I felt let down by this as I believe that Superman is defiantly a character that is about more than just fighting, maybe I was expecting too much. That said it is still a good book but I just feel that it could have been so much better than what it is, if only the writers had spent a bit more time planning it out. If you want a graphic novel full of action then get this! If you want one with more of a plot then best avoid.

Blast from the past
This book was something I adored as a child when growing up. I lost that copy many many years back, so I decided to order this copy. The book was everything I remembered as a kid, an escalating slugfest. Each fight as the book went on got more brutal until the finality happens. It's a wonderful book about superman in a time where the man was unbeatable. Superman fans should definitely read this book.

Excellent

Also bitte...
Dann den Nachfolgeband, "A World Without Superman" lesen.
