Maybe I don't expect a lot from freeze-dried meals, which also makes me cringe at their cost, but I think this meal was one of the better ones I've had. Yes, it's not restaurant or homemade quality. If you pick up a freeze-dried meal expecting that, then I don't know what to say. If you know what you're getting yourself into though, then this is a great addition to your meal rotation. Especially if you're looking for something meat-less. And as far as price goes, this is in one of the more affordable ranges for freeze-dried meals, which is nice as it gives me more options to take out with me. As others have mentioned, there is a noticeable spice to it. If you like spicy food, then it's nice to have that as an option and there were no digesting issues experienced from it. If you are sensitive to spicy foods though, then be warned. Especially if you have a limited supply of water with you.

The Chana Masala Backpacker's Pantry was a great meal during a short backpacking trip I recently took. It's easy to make, just pour boiling water into the package and wait for it to rehydrate and cook the rice. Ultimately, the rice never quite got to a "fully" cooked texture, but it was totally edible and still tasted pretty good. This meal was spicier than expected, which is a plus for me. I will buy this again for future trips, it's a no-brainer meal for backpacking.

This stuff is spicy and has a great flavor underneath the spice, unlike more bland backpacking meals. It tastes like real Indian food and is very filling. It will sit in your stomach for the day and give you energy. I will get some more again if it becomes available. It's the best plant based backpacking meal I have found. Highly recommend getting some if you have trouble finding good plant-based meals.

I bought this to try since it was an add on purchase and good vegetarian options are sometimes harder to find. I was surprised at how good it tasted! Super easy to prepare, just added the exact amount of boiling water from directions, stir well, re-seal, and let it sit for 20 minutes. Stirred again before serving. Rehydrated perfectly, no crunchy rice or garbanzo beans. Made more food than we thought, definitely filled us up with the 2 serving size. It was a little on the salty side but not enough to make me not want to eat it again. It's just spicy enough to be tasty without it being overpowering. I will buy this again and am adding it to the rotation of backpacking meals.
