It did not come with an official Nintendo controller but a brand new offbrand one. I later found one at a used game store as I prefer the weight and plastic feel of the original controller. For her eighth birthday she asked for a "new" one. I purchased the purple one (used) for her from Amazon. It works just fine. Purple is one of her favorite colors so this is perfect. It came with a purple controller and power cord. She loved it. It was well packaged and and in great condition. With all the expensive gaming systems out there, my daughter's age group seems to be ignored. But the Gamecube, if you can find one, has kid friendly games and is fun to play. Thankfully, my teenage sons started out on a Gamecube and we have lots of original games from their childhood that she can play.
