The Humble Pie book did a great job of teaching them about standing up for yourself when you feel like you’ve been taken advantage of and it was a great book about friendship as well. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Favorite book in the series *by N***T on November 6, 2025* You could hear a pin drop in my second grade classroom as I read this story aloud. We talked about what it means to be humble before reading. It’s a word and character trait 7-8 year olds are not familiar with. They loved the friendship between cake and pie. In this story, pie and cake are best friends and pair up for a school project. Cake gets too busy with other activities to do the project with pie, who ends up doing the majority of the project on his own. He is use to being in the shadows of others, letting them take credit for his work, and staying out of the spotlight. He’s running out of time to finish the project and begins to get really stressed (and sort of resentful towards Cake.) He decides to go out of his comfort zone and have an uncomfortable conversation to Cake about it. Cake finally steps up to help, highlighting both of their strengths in the project and presentation, and ultimately altering Pie’s perspective of what it means to be humble. There are many lessons to be learned from this story for children of all ages. My second graders were thoroughly engaged and loved the illustrations too.
