Elite Survival Systems Recon 5 Sleeping Bag

2 backpacking trips so far, both have been in hot weather. The -5 bag is hot enough that I just use it as a quilt and even then I throw an arm out at night. The toe box is rugged e ough I can just crawl in with shoes on and pass out. The bag is big enough I stay under it. I plan to only buy one bag for all my backpacking needs and I think this is it. I ditched the stuff sack to cut weight. I just stuff it in my pack. Works better.

Tested this bad boy out in -5F temps in PA. It certainly gets the job done, easy to pack and compress in it's included bag. I wouldn't complain about anything regarding this bag, but if you're larger than a size XL in clothes, it may not be large enough for you, just a consideration.

Bought this bag for my son who used it on his Navy deployment to the beaches of NE Australia. A Reserve Naval officer who said he would have been really cold using Navy gear. It was easy to pack and most importantly keeps you warm under harsh conditions.

Purchased two for BOB..have not used as of yet. Waterproof per amazon description is doubtful. Workmanship appears good as well as quality of overall material. Also purchased slip-over military covers for extra element protection. Would recommend outside purchase of quality stuff bag. The wraparound i.e bad is pretty funky. Most likely would purchase again hopefully at a lower price.

I was very cold in a tent, in this bag in 43F weather. Also the zipper pull came right off the first time I used it. So now no zipper pull but zipper still functions. I do like how compact it gets, the coloration is great and the stuff sack is wonderfulAlso does not have mosquito net like I thought it did.

I have the Recon 2, and the system of these bags is pretty great. Zippers could be a size up. The stuff sack is a huge part of it, they are great stuff sacks. The materials for the bags are great. As for the weather ratings...they're tough guy ratings. I haven't used this bag all the way down to -4F, and I can't say how that'll hold up. I've used it in the mid 20's and was pretty comfortable, but getting down to -4F is still a way to go. I had a bag years ago, -20C rating and it held up to that no problem. Cats pissed on it though. I think I would still double up the Recon 5 with the Recon 2 over it, if I was going to get it down to -4F, but I'm not sure if the design of these bags would accommodate doubling up. Other than that, it's a great bag. Quite a bit bigger than the Recon 2, but worth it during the fall when doing some motorcycle camping.
