Q: How does a tty phone work

A TTY (teletypewriter) sends a specific sound/signal that corresponds to a letter or symbol on the keyboard over the phone line that another TTY recognizes, then displays it on its screen. This is why if the one of the parties does not have a TTY a relay service is used to provide the conversion.
