Hi there. I've tried a range of shades over the years now. I'm fair/blonde. I started with 'shell', and found it too light/undertone too pink. 'Sand' has slightly warm/yellow/vanilla tones - will look lightly tanned on fair skin, but not in a bad 'fake tan orange/dark' way. It's a lovely tone and I've stuck with it for a while. I use this when I want slightly more colour in my face. 'Bone' is probably the best true 'match' shade for fair skin though. I use this as well and sometimes I even mix with the 'sand' shade. I have both. 'Bone' is probably the best base colour for fair skin, and mixing with 'sand' warms/tans it up. You could mix the 'sand' with any remaining 'shell' that you have. Or get a fair-skin-friendly bronzer and apply over a 'bone' shade if you find 'bone' is still too light. Also, I'd say google image/youtube search the colours for people actually trying out the shades, rather than relying on the Estee Lauder colour 'swatches,' because I find the colour swatches actually don't much look like the shades you get in the bottle. Which is confusing for people. Probably the only drawback because the makeup itself (when you have the right shade) is great. So, in summary, 'sand' is suitable to use alone on fair skin, yes. 'Bone' is a good interim between 'sand' and 'shell,' and the undertone of 'bone' is better than 'shell' for sure. 'Bone' is 'light sand,' basically. 'Sand' can also be mixed with a little moisturiser to 'dilute' it if you find it too dark on it's own (and that'll make it go a bit further.) It also works well when mixed with a lighter shade such as 'bone' (preferred) or 'shell.' Hope some of that helps. Neither 'sand' nor 'bone' have pinkish or orange undertones, though, which was the main thing for me.
