King Size Bed Frame - Looks Great, Solid Construction (...with a few extra parts from Home Depot)
Like another reviewer, I saw this frame, thought it was ideal for many reasons: great price ($187), wooden, low-profile/minimal, reviews for the most part positive, etc. I didn't want to take any chances when it came to being solid/secure (I cannot stand when beds are unstable in the least bit and will opt to put the mattress directly on the floor to avoid such issues). That said, I certainly much prefer a frame, so with the purchase of a new king size mattress (Sleep Innovations, Alden model, if you're wondering), I had the Murray Platform frame shipped along as well.First notes: comes in two long boxes, well packaged, no damage or missing parts upon arrival... I proceeded to immediately bang one of the finished, wooden rails into the wall, slightly damaging both. Lovely. In the boxes, you get 4 outer rails, one nylon-tethered set of slats, 1 center support beam, 4 center support legs, screws, washers, washer-locks, and an Allen wrench. My first thought was that the frame would be very sturdy, as is, for a full or twin, but not quite enough for a queen, and absolutely not enough for a king. The price, however, is great, and Home Depot sells everything you will need to secure it for $30 or less, so really, I don't see this as a loss. So, I set about setting it up, and here is the way I decided to go about it (you will want/need a power drill with a Phillips head drill bit to accomplish this):Go to Home Depot/Lowes/Etc and purchase the following (you'll need to request cuts to be made, which is simple, as they do it for you):2 - 6ft long, 2-1/2 in. x 3/4 in. slats (mimicking the center support that come in the box)1 - 1-1/4 in. x 1-1/4 in. square dowel, cut into 10, 6 in. pieces (mimicking the support legs that come in the box)1 - Box #6 x 1-1/4 in. flat head Phillips WOOD screws (you'll need about 15-20... overkill, but still... just buy a box of 50-100)(Optional) 2 - Masonite boards (aka hardboard tempered panels), cut to 72 in x 38 in (I prefer the smooth surface of masonite to plywood, which is slightly heavier and will have a rougher natural surface)(Optional) 1 - Box #8 x 3/4 in. flat head Phillips WOOD screws (you'll need about 15-20... overkill, but still... just buy a box of 50-100)-Pick the room it's going in, clear out a large, open space-(Like the other reviewer said) Beginning with the nylon-tethered slat assembly, using a wall as your guide, make certain it's pulled nice and taut, and push the ends of each slat up against the wall to make sure they're even with one another-Lay the center support down the middle and go about hand fastening the screws, from the top (which is currently facing the floor) - yes, it's a little tricky, but definitely easier than top-side up first-Attached the center support legs to their pre-drilled/designated holes***Left and Right support slats Assembly***-Attach 4 of the 6 in. legs you had cut to one of the 6 ft slats you had cut with one, 1-1/4 in. screws a piece - I staggered mine against where the legs attached to the center support are (repeat this step for the other 6ft slat)-Lay this new support slat across the left or right side of the slat assembly, just like the center one it came with is. I aligned mine on the INSIDE of the nylon tether (using it as a bit of a guide)-Using only 3 or 4 1-1/4 in. screws, secure the slat to the bottom, just as the center one is - be careful not to countersink the screws too deep, or they'll pop out the top(Repeat the previous two steps on the other side)-Flip the entire slat-assembly over so it is standing on all three support slats and multitude of legs-Take 4 more 1-1/4 in. screws and further secure the new slats to the slat-assembly-Take a couple more of the support legs you had cut and put them under two of the slats in the middle (under the center support it came with) and secure them w/1-1/4 in. screws***At this point, follow the remaining directions that come with the frame itself, securing/tightening everything fully... I opted to add additional screws all over the place, just so I would have zero movement.******Be certain to adjust the center support legs it came with so 6 inches so nothing is uneven!!***Optional Step:-After fully assembled, I opted to put two pieces of masonite (aka hardboard tempered panels) down, centered, and secured them with about 15 or so 3/4 in screws (overkill, I know), per board, around the perimeter-This achieves a nearly completely smooth, solid surface for your bed to lay on, instead of gaps, that can become noticeable over time.SO! Moral of the story: This is a great deal and easy to put together. That said, I WOULD NOT recommend this product for king/queen beds WITHOUT the additional support added. The manufacturer could easily add to additional supports, exactly like the center one it comes with, for minimal cost, and charge $30-$50 more, and I (and I imagine many others), still would've purchased, but there would be practically no bad reviews based on how solid the construction is.

How Low......Can You Go!?!
Before we remodeled our bedroom, my wife and I had a very BIG, very boring, and very conventional bedding setup: A tall headboard attached to a massive queen-size mattress and box spring sitting on a metal frame, and a fabric skirt which hid the frame and all of our junk underneath it. A monolith, if there ever was one, and pretty much the over-priced 1,200 plus dollar QUEEN mattress set that every couple has bought in the past 20 years. And adding to the bulk, we both had our own end table on either side of the bed. There was two basic problems with this setup: 1) The tall headboard blocked one of the windows and 2) I got tired of having to reach over to her end table to turn off the noisy alarm clock after she had gotten up, and she got tired of having to reach over to my end table to get a magazine that I finished reading. And, to a lesser degree, this massive bedding setup overpowered everything else in our less-than-roomy bedroom. After living with this imperfect setup for four years, we decided to change things up a bit and go with more of a minimalist aesthetic; less is more, I always say. So, we decided to purchase this platform bed from here on Amazon, pairing it with an eleven inch thick memory foam mattress AND, AND, AND a bookcase headboard. The bookcase headboard was the key piece that really made the whole thing work! And Wow! What a difference this new setup has made! (More on that later.)As for this platform bed:Everything was shipped in two packages. The packaging was excellent. Nothing was damaged. The precious contents are covered in foam wrap and protected with styrofoam slabs; then of course everything is encased in cardboard, and the whole thing is wrap up with three and four straps for added security. KUDOS!Putting the bed together was pretty simple. The hardest part was attaching the slats that hold up the mattress to the frame. It took me about 2 hours to get everything just right. Just take your time and think things through. From a minimalist perspective, the bed is absolutely beautiful. [Mattress with a simple bed spread and frame, that's it.] The wood frame has a rich mahogany look, and the photos on Amazon don't do it justice. It's got clean lines with absolutely not frills. It's low, low, LOW to the ground. Paired with the memory foam mattress, it really makes for a very low profile. I'm tall and when I get up from this bed, I feels like I'm getting up from the ground, it's that low.--Added 5/5/2013------I just want to add something: This platform bed is really quiet!!! With a memory foam mattress, there're no rattles, squeaks, creaks, or cracking sounds. It really helps when getting a good night's rest. For the price, you get one heck of a beautiful product. I highly recommend this bed.-------------------------------------Now, lets talk about the bookcase headboard that I paired with this platform bed. This was the key to solving the two problems that I stated earlier. The old setup blocked a window. This setup does not block the window at all. The platform is low, and so too is the bookcase headboard. Now for the fist time in four years, my wife and I can see out and even open up the window and allow the beauty of the outside world in.AND HERE'S THE BEST PART: We were able to get rid of the two side tables that took up space on either side of the old bed (remember, less is more) and consolidate all of our stuff into the bookcase headboard. NOW, we can SHARE our stuff! The remote control, the alarm clock, books, magazines, smartphones, THE LIGHT, all are within arms reach of either of us. Her smartphone goes off? I can now reach for it with ease to turn it off. I cannot believe that we did not do this earlier.Actually, the best part is the price. This platform, a memory foam mattress, the bookcase headboard, sheets and a comforter can all be had here at AMAZON for around 800 bucks!!!----------6/25/2015----UPDATE----------So my wife and I have had this wonderful platform bed for a few years now, and we couldn't be happier. The finish is still in excellent shape. Nothing is damaged, and the joints are still tight as ever. I installed a three-prong furniture glide on the bottom of each of the bed's four feet. We have wooden floors, and these help keep the floor's finish nice. Also, we can slide the bed around a bit easier. And this helps keep the bed's legs from getting loose, or from folding over or breaking - an added benefit, to be sure.Again, after two years of solid use, this platform bed has held up admirably. STILL HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
