My husband got this for me for Christmas because Bob Ross use to come to Muncie, IN to film his painting show there and He knew I was a fan of his fro. It took several days for the thing to sprout. The top of his head was the hardest to grow, but it did grow in well once it sprouted. I tried keeping it filled with water but a lot of it leaked out into the tray everyday so you have to mess a couple times a day with watering it. I was wondering if it would be safe if birds ate the sprouts but there was no information on the website if the sprouts were safe. One person told me the terra cotta pots sometimes were high in lead but I never found out if that was true or urban legend. Anyway My bird didn't eat it. I've replanted the sprouts a few times. It's a cool chia pet! I suggest that you purchase chia seeds from your local health food store. They grow much faster than the seeds that came in the kit!

Always loved these silly Chia Pets !! For a white elephant gift at Christmas, I thought what the heck, lets get one. Well, it turned out to be a hit ! The family thought so....So, now I buy one for every Christmas ! It became a tradition !! I do enjoy growing them also. Sometimes they don't always seem to fill-in all the way, at least for me, but it's a cute little gift.

Never have done the Chia Pets before but when they came out with Bob Ross we had to try it. My mother was an avid fan of his. We’ve had fun watching it change through the days. It’s nice that the package of seeds are enough for more plantings. It’s a fun & easy indoor gardening project!

Ever since I was a small child I wanted a chia pet. I would see that perfectly 90s CH CH CH Chia! commercial all the time and just wish I 18 so I would be old enough to call that toll free number but sadly I was not. Years went by and I thought about my dreams of owning a chia pet. The sheep was classic but lame, Groot? Nah. Bob Ross? Meh. For years I wandered the planet with no chia pet to my name. Finally chia pet of my dreams was announced. I waited patiently for him to arrive and got to work immediately with planting my Weird Al chia pet. I love plants so I took this on as more of a plant than a gimmick. I did research...what kind of sun light do chia plants like, how much water, etc. I settled for a north facing window and did my best to keep them as moist as possible. Putting the chia goop on his head is a fun challenge. I put about double the recommended chia seeds to get a full coat of seeds. After placing them on his head I spent the next several hours baby sitting it and pulling up the droopy chia seed goop until it was sticking. Then I followed the directions did the water fill up and tray drain daily. I kept this up longer than recommended and once I noticed the mail pattern baldness setting in (the water evaporates from his head) I did my best to mist the top of his head every day every two hours or so. I think he turned out great and the whole process lasted 4 weeks or so as the instructions said. Since I love plants anyway I went a little crazy with the care but I think a person can passively take care of their Al and he would still look good.

I've always dreamed of having a chia pet since i saw them when i was little and now that I am over 30 I thought I finally deserved one. I received it as a gift on Christmas and was so eager to grow the iconic Ross Fro. How disappointing it was. All the other reviews are right. You have to water it constantly to keep it filled due to the porous terracotta pot, and gravity means water only stays filled at the bottom where there is no hair. The drip tray was not even close to enough to contain the water seeping out through the pot and it was too much work to constantly lift the heavy pot to empty the tray. I ended up using a dish for drip tray instead. The application is pretty difficult for the hair because it keeps sliding down. The best method I found is to mix the chia seeds with minimal water possible, and lay down the bob on his side (any) to apply on one side with a butter knife. Wait til it's dry, rotate to another side, rinse and repeat. After all that work, your cat smashes it by throwing it to the ground. After buying a second one and trying again, it grows great for about 2 seconds before molding and sliming. I tried putting the chia seeds on his bust instead and that worked much better for 2 seconds longer. I also just ended up putting the Bob figurine on the shelf without the seeds. Basically, the design of the hair/chia being on top of a terracotta pot makes it impossible for you to enjoy this chiapet. I look into his eyes and I no longer see joy in them, only insanity. I'm so sad. Bob would've told me that there are no mistakes in this world, only happy accidents. But he is gone and this was a mistake.

My chia seeds were duds, but the bust of Rose is hilarious, so I don't even mind that she didn't grow a green 'fro.

This was my first chia pet and I enjoyed watching this product grow. I used instructions from a blog that suggested after the planter and seeds had completely dried, use a spray bottle and a plastic bag to dampen the planter with water to allow the seeds to germinate and stick to the planter to help stop seeds from sliding off. Once the roots were long enough, remove the plastic bag and add water daily to allow the chia seeds to grow. I would also probably use a little less than 2 tsp of chia seeds (maybe 1.5 tsp) for this chia pet, as I had a lot of seeds left after I covered one layer of seeds on the entire head.

The guys at my husbands workplace screwed up the mixture and didn’t put it on evenly but it was an absolute hoot watching her grow hair and all the phases she went through. All in all it was a riot and good laughs.

A little hard to keep all the seeds in place, since you're trying to keep just the fro. But, once they take, it's hilarious.
