Reading Comprehension, Grades 7 to 8 : School Specialty Publishing: desertcart.in: Books Review: Five Stars - This is a very useful book for 7 and 8 graders. Review: I homeschool my 13 yr old a couple days a week, and was extremely pleased to come across this Reading Comprehension workbook. My 8th grader has Dyslexia and I have found this to be an excellent tool for us to read very interesting and engaging stories, that involve Social Studies, Science, History, Geography, fiction, non-fiction and poetry, literary classics, etc. I have personally noticed that by working with my child, this book has enhanced my student's reading comprehension. We both look forward to the entertaining topics that motivate to learn. This book is helping strengthen reading skills. Dyslexia can be challenging, but with tools such as this, I see reading fluency improve and a deeper knowledge developing. I am very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend!

I use this for homework for SIXTH grade and am extremely happy with the practice it provides my students in underlining, context clues, inference, and summarizing. I purposely went a grade above their level to present a little challenge. There is one section on poetry (lyric, odes, etc) I won't use for homework because it doesn't provide enough depth of information for students to feel confident of their answers. Each assignment has one page of text and one page of related questions which range from multiple choice, yes or no, to short answer and summarizing. I do each assignment to familiarize myself with the challenges the material may present to the kids which cuts down on homework review time. I can quickly point to the area that would have answered their question. Just a quick check of the answers and discussion of any problems provides immediate feedback to the kids. They get to practice test taking skills in the comfort of their homes with no time limits. I would say the average kid can complete the assignment in about 15-20 minutes. The non-fiction topics are interesting (The Irish Famine, Pirates, Mummies...) and provide a nice, consistent pattern for homework expectations from one of their five classes.

The workbook has a good amount of learning objectives. However I think I may need to order something for myself because I am now questioning my own comprehension skills. The answer key is in the back but it would be helpful if it explained why that is the answer so when I'm explaining to my son the answers and why. One lesson I had to just table my response because I was confused. Also the layout can be a little off. Example my son did not see an answer because it was tucked up near the header. He says he would have chosen it had he seen it. Overall, I like this workbook, just would like for some of the answers to be explained as to why that is the correct choice.
