I know this is apples & oranges. But could this be compatible to the Thomas wooden railway?

Yes and no--the tracks & train are interchangeable; the cargo space is Brio specific (Thomas cargo is too big). Another issue to keep in mind is that the plastic pieces slide around a lot on hard surfaces.

How do you turn on the engine? I installed the battery but I don't see any switch to turn it on.

To turn on the engine, you have to press down the front wheels by press down on the top of the train where the arrow is.

Can the train be used without the battery without damaging it?

As far as I know, Brioche trains do not use batteries. We A LOT of them and none operate on batteries... they are very well made, hours of fun for my child. They are expensive but very high quality

Do the lights on the train turn on?

Do not remember any lights on the train. It is a beautiful wooden train set with ship and cargo pieces. It is for a young child (3 to 5 years).
