I followed his advice only after not following it and finding out the hard way! After keying the surface dilute the first thin coat 50% with No1 thinners, then the next two coats in higher concentrations of varnish. Also apply in humidity below 80% and temperature above 10 and preferably 15 degrees C and at least 24 hours between coats. High humidity can cause it to go milky and I can tell you from experience rubbing it all down again ain't fun.
