Tatting
I haven’t reviewed this book yet. It was one of several books I ordered. Right now I’m trying to learn how to knit a sock. But I’ve always wanted to know how to tat. You can make really pretty tatted items. I hope we never loose these beautiful artistry skills.

Happy Tatting~
Finally! A book on shuttle tatting that teaches various techniques that are easy to follow.Sometimes I hate being snarky, but at times there is something that needs to be pointed out: The majority of negative reviews for this book have been because the buyer did not read the entire title. I think the reviews in that regard are unfair and people should take responsibility for their own mistakes rather than judging the book and author for them.If you are looking for a book on SHUTTLE tatting, this one has worked very well for me. This coming from someone that is a beginner/just learning. I enjoy that there are several ways to tatt, as well as the historical information that the author provides. The book is filled with pictures as well as illustrations.Included in the book are five methods for shuttle tatting and one for needle tatting, tons of charts/doodles for tatting patterns, suggestions on how to block your lace safely and effectively, working with beads, and even a small section with translations if you are working with tatting patterns that are in french.

different perspective....
This book does not have too many patterns, but rather gives an overview of tatting, and the different kinds of tatting that can be produced. It covers motifs, trims, Christmas decorations, small fanciful animals, bookmarks, butterflies, "doodles", ric-rac tatting, cord tatting, three-thread tatting, Cluny tatting, etc. The few patterns included are easy to do. The trims are pretty, and Jones has a page or two on how to attach tatting to a handkerchief border which I found helpful. The "how to tat" diagrams are all done in outline form, which I found a bit hard to make sense of. They are accurate, but confusing to me. On the other hand, her diagrams of the patterns are very helpful indeed. Jones encourages us to be creative with our tatting, which I like. She shows a garment made from tatting and discusses jewelry to a minor extent.

Nice book, but...
I am enjoying the book, but it was impossible for me to learn how to tat based on this book alone. I found a REALLY good youtube video and learned from that and this book is my supplement. It does have a lot of information and showed me what I needed to look up on youtube, so I can not consider this a wasted buy. I read it from the book - try to understand and then look it up and then I got it. It is a system that works for me, so I'm pleased.I did enjoy reading about the history of tatting (that is known) and the different shuttles, and the word about threads - all very helpful and informative! It shows various methods of tatting and gives some simple starter patterns. The images are clear ...I recommend this book - along with youtube, if you learn better from watching it done like I do, but this book is very helpful :)

Very helpful book!
I am new to tatting with lots of questions & this excellent book is loaded with helpful information & instructions and has fascinating facts about the history of tatting. It also has lots & lots of nice projects to try but the author mostly included the diagrams & not the line-by-line written instructions. You could however, study the drawings & write your own written instructions to follow. There have probably been some new techniques created since Rebecca Jones publication date in 1985 but I found almost all of the answers to questions that I have had so far. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the in's & outs of tatting. There are also loads of websites, blog spots & online videos to supplement your learning experience as well. Thanks to Lacis and Amazon.com this publication is still available to the public.

Great for learning, even for lefties!
I recently taught myself to tat using various websites, but I felt like there were basic things that folks just weren't explaining clearly. I'm so glad I bought this book. Things that other people just assume you know how to do (like winding your shuttle) are clearly outlined with excellent illustrations. She does make the annoying suggestion that lefties learn to tat right-handed (harumph!), but the instructions are clear and easy enough to reverse. I totally couldn't grasp the "traditional" method of tatting until I got this book, and in 10 minutes, I was doing it like a pro. I think some of the patterns are kind of silly, but there are lots of great small projects that will keep me going for a while.

Only has shuttle tatting; where is the other book by this author?
About two years ago, I got a book from the library by this author, with a cover that looked (as far as I can remember) the same as this one, but the library book was much bigger, about 1.5" thick (and 9x11 paper), and gave excellent, detailed instructions about ALL kinds of tatting, needle and shuttle (and two-shuttle, and at least a couple different ways to tat with needles). The book I received is only a hundred-and-something pages long and is only about shuttle tatting. I will probably return it, since it is not the book I was interested in owning.

Great book on tatting
I love this book. I have gotten so many ideas from it over the years. I had to reorder it because I lent the first one out to a friend and never got it back. It has about 5 different ways to tat. I'd recomend this book to anyone looking for a good tatting book to add to their library. The Complete Book of Tatting: Everything You Wanted to Know but Couldn't Find Out About Shuttle Lace
