If your looking at this, you should probably just buy it.
Fantastic book, full of an extremely useful range of information, however does lack some areas I'd have expected to be included. Was sitting on the work bench at my friend's new unilever job, need I say more? This book provides an excellent range of information written in understandable english with a great detail of information and easy to understand diagrams, useful for students and professionals alike.

One of the best things I've ever bought.
I cannot speak highly enough about this book, I bought the earlier edition and fell in love with it. The illustrations are detailed and the book covers tons of topics in great detail and has answered many of the niggling questions I have often wondered about. A++

... the first 1/2 years of my degree as a good 'refresher' text
This served me well throughout the first 1/2 years of my degree as a good 'refresher' text. I found it to be a fine introductory biochemistry textbook, but for anything deeper and more substantial you're gong to have to go for something like 'Molecular Biology of the Cell'.

Brilliant !
Fantastic book, good use of diagrams, well written and extremely helpful for my biochemistry based degree scheme, would recommend to anyone in a similar degree as it is fantastic for additional reading and clarifying things that are unclear, excellent section on fatty acids.

Really pleased at how quickly this came from Travel-Time
Really pleased at how quickly this came from Travel-Time. Only £20 and wasn't expecting it to be a hard back cover either! I like the layout of this biochem textbook, it's easy to follow.

I bought this book brand new and was a bit disappointed that the corners were squashed other then that it came on time.

Biochemistry by Stryer: Essential
For anyone who needs any information on metabloic processes and biological structures this is a must buy. This book contained material better than some of my lectures and in my opinion a must buy for anyone studying a biological subject.

Very good
I purchased this textbook shortly after starting university, where I am studying Biological Sciences. It has good, up to date information, and is well laid out with diagrams. Essentially what you'd expect from a good textbook.

comparison to non-international version
The "international version" is currently $100 cheaper than the non-international version, so I started comparing and this is what I found out:SAME:- Table of Contents- student companion web site- instructor resources (overhead transparencies, CD-ROM; matching ISBN's)^ the similarities were enough for me to feel comfortable purchasing the book despite the differences outlined below.DIFFERENT:- ISBN's- listed publisher (WH Freeman for non-international, WH Freeman and Palgrave Macmillan for international)- cover (International version is labeled as such and indicated further by a light gray border, and a note on cover that says, "This edition is for use outside the USA and Canada")- student companion book (different ISBN's, different # of pages claimed)QUESTIONABLE:- # of pages -- the Amazon listing and publisher website for the International version both claim that the book has 1,026 pages. That is not exactly true. The international version here in front of me has 1,098 pages of text devoted to the content outlined by the Table of Contents. To be fair, they might have omitted from that count all pages that pertain to end-of-chapter problems (mathematically that would make sense); but they have also omitted a page count for introductory text (32 pages), Appendix A (30 pages of problem answers), Appendix B (48 page index), blank (8 pages), and the back inside cover is also printed with tables for Acidity Constants and Standard Bond Lengths. All of this to say that you cannot make a valid comparison based on claimed page numbers alone. The Amazon listing and publisher website for the non-international version claims 1,120 pages. Draw your own conclusions.OTHER NOTES:If you are doing your own comparison here are some other identifying details from the International version that might help you:Library of Congress Control Number: 2010937856 (listed on back of title page near copyright/publisher info)ISBN 13: 978-1-4292-7635-1ISBN 10: 1-4292-7635-5Copyright 2012, 2007, 2002 by W.H.
