How wide is the slide?

18-20 inch is my guess. I'm an average size adult & it both holds my 160 pound self & my behind fits down the slide.... yes I've slid down the slide! My daughter insisted.

is it possible to fit another twin mattress underneath?

Length by width sure. The height might be an issue. There is 29 inches between the floor and the bottom of the mattress frame.

My son is 5 years old and 44 inches tall. The slide seems short. Is he too tall to enjoy it?

No he should be fine, my daughter is almost 4 and she is around 40 inches tall and is perfect for it. I also babysit with the oldest being 10 she is a little big for it obviously but even she still enjoys it as much as my 3 yo.

Are you able to put the slide on the other side and move the stairs?

No you can't. With the way it is built the stairs and slide can only attach safety in one place
