Fun, durable, but shorter battery life & tricky controls
There's a lot of makers of this style stunt RC car, and at the end of the day it's easy to see why. It's a super fun and dynamic take on the standard RC car toy. This one follows the same tried and true formula where the wheels on each side are able to rotate over each other when you turn quickly or bump into something. This means the car can very quickly change direction, do some cool stunts, and needs the user to have some quick thinking to reverse the way they're aiming the joysticks when it happens if they want to continue going in the same direction they were before the flip. The Good:This car is pretty fast, and is durable enough to handle quite a bit of crashing and banging around. It's pretty easy and consistent to make the wheels flip, which makes it pretty reliable for navigation and stunts, assuming you've got the hang of the controls (more on that later). We didn't have any problems with pairing the remote with the car, and the range on the remote is pretty far. We live on a flag lot (a house behind another house with a long driveway up to the road), and while standing at the bottom of our driveway, we were able to drive the car all the way up to the street without losing connectivity between the remote and the car.Areas of Improvement:It comes with a spare rechargeable battery, so you can charge one while you're busy playing. It comes with a charge cord that plugs into a USB-A port. Unfortunately, the battery takes longer to charge than the other battery lasts when you're playing with the car (likely due to using the older and slower USB technology), so once you burn through both batteries you still will need to stop playing to recharge. Each battery lasts for around 25 minutes of play. We were trying another maker's version of this style RC car at the same time, and that car's single battery not only lasted longer than a single battery charge of this car, it outlasted BOTH batteries in this car.Control-wise, this car is a little tricky for younger kids to learn to control. The remote has two joysticks, and each controls a different pair of wheels. To go forward, you push forward on both sticks. To spin, you push forward on one and back on the other. To turn a little bit, you can keep pushing on one joystick and stop pushing on the other. My 6yr old daughter kept getting a bit frustrated with the controls since it's not very intuitive, which makes it harder to control it well while running around at full speed. Older kids and adults should be able to compensate and learn the controls, but compared to the other car we were trying which had one joystick for forward/back and one for left/right, where each joystick handled controlling all 4 wheels to make your commands happen, this version was definitely was more challenging to control.Verdict:You really can't go wrong with any example of this type of RC car, and this is a perfectly respectable version of it. It's just not done quite as well as the other one we were testing at the time, hence the one dropped star.
