The display area of the refractometer is quite small, less than half the size of my previous refractometer so if you've got old eyes like me it is hard to read but it focuses well and after calibrating the device I had no real problem. But once you focus the refractometer you will never get it back in the case. When the focus ring is screwed in fully it will barely fit in the case. Now 7 months later the black plastic that covers the barrel of the device split. Just sitting in its case, no abuse, no misuse. I wanted a nice refractometer and hoped this would be the one but I can't recommend this one for the price.

Upon receiving the D&D unit, I did not have to calibrate the tool. It is very accurate compared to the hydrometer I was using prior to purchase. It is very fast and extremely easy to use. I researched alot of these and this one is alone in that the fact it is designed for true seawater use and not like the others with saltwater use. I think it makes a difference. It comes with a nice storage case as well. And best of all could not beat the price and very fast shipping! One of the best items I found to help in the expensive but rewarding hobby of reefkeeping.

Tested salt water and this unit is easy enough to calibrate and use. It seems to test consistantly but the eye piece is a problem. It does not adjust easily and stay adjusted/set. Another person mention the eye piece fell off I can understand that with how this adjusts and does not hold the adjustment. I would look to buy another refractometer and pass on this one if I had to do over.

We use the refractometer for salt water production. This particular brand was highly recommended by coral/salt water hobbyists (read the forums). The refractometer has a heavy duty feel but also screams precision. Out of the box we had to do a calibration with RODI water. The process was simple and took all of 20 seconds to calibrate.After calibration we tested the tank water and it measured up perfect.Overall a great buy and well worth the money.

It performed really well until the eyepiece fell off a month after I purchased it. I tried fixing it, but it won't stay on. Now I have to check my salinity without the eyepiece on and it is hard to adjust and it feels uncomfortable to use.

The reduced scale measurement on this really helps viewing salinity tests, and provides a nice sharp line indicator. I had to recalibrate the unit when I received it, but that was easily done by letting it cool to 68 degrees and using the provided fuild.

I had a brand new plastic hydrometer that I originally relied on at first, when I bought this one the reading were way different, I trust this a lot more than the hydrometers, so do the professional at my local reef store.

Nice for price and consistent. Just loose focus adjuster.
