Q: Can it keep the door open for long? I'd like to use it in a fire door with a self closing chain mechanism

It doesn't keep the door open, it is for assisting the door closing or for softening the closing action of the door. I have used in reverse to prevent the slamming of a door which so far has worked quite well, the door still swings shut but is no longer slams.

Q: The hallway is only the width of the door with walls either side, so i'm wondering if this is suitable given the arm sticks out a long way.

I think the door will be too close the wall to get full opening

Q: Can it be used on an external gate?

no only suitable for internal doors

Q: How can I reduce the opening effort

I have not discovered that It is stiff but a useful deterrent to small children here
